Okay so I see why this is a popular book, and I don't totally disagree. It's a well formed storyline about mistakes when coming off age, and it avoids the biggest annoyance for me: characters apologizing when they didn't do anything wrong. But... I don't like dubious cheating stories so this won't be a favorite.

This book has so many important messages and topics it talks about and criticises, while maintaining a lovely and adorable, hilarious atmosphere. It is full of representation and feelings as well as education. I don't know where to start with how I feel about this book. Though it was, at times, difficult to get through and continue, I believe it is an important milestone for the queer community and allies alike.
It is full of learning, loving, mistakes, honesty, communication, consent and boundaries that give a great outlook on how relationships ,platonic, romantic and familial, should be like. I believe it has a message for everyone that they can learn from and take to heart. 100/10 would definetly recommend.

3.5
This was my first queer book as a queer youth, I went through many mixed feelings through this book for various reasons but found by the end I really loved it. Jay is from a small town where he is the only uncloseted gay boy and he has a gay agenda in which he compiles all the romantic things he wishes to accomplish, this feels faraway until his family moves to Seattle where the school he goes to has a thriving LGBTQ+ community. I can definitely relate to the character in some aspects but I found that Jay was a really one-dimensional character, it often felt like his only personality trait was being gay and proving he wasn't a gay stereotype. I would've loved it if he felt more alive. The character was also a hypocrite which pissed me off, he mentioned how he was surrounded by "sex-crazed maniac straights" but I doubt there was a single chapter without him mentioning he wants to get laid. He also was constantly lying and putting himself deeper in trouble which I found so irritating. I didn't enjoy the main character until the last few chapters which made me end up not enjoying the book as much as I wanted. On the other hand, I loved some of the side characters especially Lu, Albert and Reese. I found all of them endearing and without them, I don't think I would've enjoyed the book as much. The romance in the book was not my favourite but I really really loved Albert and I think Albert was the one who pulled the whole weight in the book and friendships/relationships. There was also lots of miscommunication and lies which made the plot as it is, if you don't like those things I don't recommend this book at all. So, there were many things I disliked but things I enjoyed. I wish I had read some queer romance books when I was younger, I think it would've made a load of difference for me and other lgbtq+ teens.

Loved this book! It's definitely written for a younger audience than me, but it is so sweet & charming, and all of the character just feel so real. Definitely a good (and semi-emotional) read if you're queer and didn't get a chance to grow into that until you were older.

Only qualm-- the character Max explicitly states his pronouns as both he/him AND she/her, and then no character in the entire rest of the book ever uses the she/her pronouns for her. :/

3.3/5

Ooh, I dunno guys. I liked the concept, and I liked the writing style (Jason June is an awesome writer), but I don’t know how much I actually enjoyed the book. Most of the time I was reading jt, I was just yelling at Jay to not be an idiot (it didn’t work, he was an idiot anyways).

People who date more than one person at a time confuse me. Obviously if you’re honest with all the people involved it’s absolutely fine, but Jay was not honest with Tony or Albert at all, which I thought was really wrong. The book wasn’t endorsing cheating, or dishonesty, but it was still painful to read. Max also really annoyed me, just because I don’t like people who don’t think before they speak, and he also betrayed Jays trust a lot. Jay also got on my nerves, as did his “gay agenda” and how he thought it was okay to hook up with one person while he was dating another.

I really loved how this book was written, though, and all the representation it had (and Lu and Albert were wonderful characters!!). It was a nice read, but I just didn’t like the main character or his actions so that kinda ruined it for me.

I’d recommend this to fans of books like Boyfriend Material or Perfect on Paper, or just anyone who likes gay books (especially sex-positive ones!!).

Trigger warnings for this book include cheating (because in my opinion it was cheating) and vague sexual content (it’s more obvious than in most ya books so it might be weird for some people to read idk)

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I will say I read this via audiobook, and the repetition of Jay's list at the beginning of most chapters was...very annoying. I feel like if I had read this physically my eyes would have just breezed over those parts.
There was a lot to love about this. Many parts were very funny and super relatable. Others...I was super annoyed with Jay for a big portion. Seems like he intentionally does things he knows will hurt others and then kind of tries to get out of them and make excuses. I didn't love that. I did like some of the other characters though, and the ending was nice!

I have very mixed feelings about this one, as an adult reader, I enjoyed it, and I can see how this book could really speak to teens both in a very sex-positive way, and how to avoid the number one way to ruin a relationship -by lying. However, some things were really great, some things weren't, but overall I think this book has good morals and the MC learns from his mistakes and has good character growth.

Content warnings that are not included in storygraph:
cheating but without a DTR (define the relationship) and the virginity talk was very heteronormative for a very gay book.
