Talk about creepy. Not my usual genre, but listened to the audiobook on the recommendation of an acquaintance. Definitely utilises the medium more than any other book I’ve “read” before. A very gripping tale, with a satisfyingly unsatisfying ending, however I do feel like it jumped the shark  enough for me to disconnect from the horror. Plus, psychopaths make for somewhat boring character studies.

I audibly said “what the f*ck” after the last line.
I fully understand why people either love or hate this book.

Quite a bit is left ambiguous at the end and the reader is free to make assumptions or guess what is and isn’t the truth (think the manuscript/letter situation in Verity).

We are left never knowing which version is the truth but you are absolutely given tools to try and figure it out for yourself. I personally don’t like open ended stories and I love a solid resolution so this wasn’t my favorite but almost fully because of the ending, that and the fact that the first 10% was really hard to get into.

The characters weren’t very likeable but that’s usually not a dealbreaker for me when it comes to a thriller. I really disliked the fact that Nathan had to die (not a fan of unnecessary deaths just for shock value, maybe a personal preference).

Obviously going into it, the game itself tells you not to believe everything you hear. But, I’m gullible and forgetful, and I took everything she said as gospel and couldn’t wait to see if her husband died at the end of this. Well, might be a little sorry about that now that things are a little less clear.

What I do know:
- regardless of how they got there, Josie’s husband was with her from a VERY young age.
- something is off with the daughters (but I don’t think they were involved in any deaths)
- Josie is crazy… 🤷🏻‍♀️
- Alix probably could’ve prevented a lot of things had she just put her intuition above getting ahead.

Not my favorite, but I see why people love it.

If you’re choosing between the audiobook and the physical version, go audio.
Feels very much like watching a true crime doc, where every narrator is unreliable and clearly has their own agenda. I love a book that isn’t afraid to leave questions unanswered, and this one does it well.

I was really excited for this book. I definitely hyped it up more in my head so I ended up being a little let down.

Overall, it was twisty and weird. I loved the concept of the plot but wasn’t 100% thrilled with the execution.

I would have loved to seen more with Josie’s family. Some truth.

I think what I don’t like about this book is the unreliable characters & how you don’t actually know what’s completely true.

I thought this book was fantastic. The use of interesting but unreliable characters has you hooked the entire way through. As you slowly start to figure out what is happening, putting the pieces together to solve the mystery of the main character, you realize that everyone is lying. Not just her.

The ONLY thing I didn’t like was the fact that they tried to make a literal PEDOPHILE a victim in this book. No thanks.
