Reading this book feels like walking along a bridge of twigs, knowing that, the next step, it could snap. It creates a tug of war between your curiosity and a sense of complete and utter dread. “Something isn’t right,” you tell yourself as you turn page after page, waiting for the shoe to finally drop.

This was my first time reading a Lisa Jewell novel, and I can confidently say it won’t be my last. Jewell has this unique ability to craft ever-present suspense, characters that operate emotionally, yet logically. None of This is True brings together two “birthday twins,” women born on the same day in the same year in the same hospital. Their lives, however, couldn’t be more different. As Alix Summer interviews Josie Fair for her new podcast, the two become dangerously and irreparably intertwined.

I was warned that this story would have an “insane” plot twist that left you questioning everything you thought to be true about the narrative (as the title suggests), but I would argue that the “gotcha” moment is less a moment and more a subtle, constant and lingering precariousness. For me, the bridge didn’t snap, and I didn’t fall, but when I’d crossed to the other side I couldn’t be certain I was on solid ground again. It left me afraid to look down.

Jewell fills her readers’ heads with questions and allows them to decipher the answers—an under-appreciated display of trust. There is often nothing I love more than a story that leaves me thinking long beyond the final page. I expect more of Jewell’s work will do the same.

4⭐️ I think…
My brain is still thinning about that ending and what is and isn’t true. I can’t tell if I was hooked throughout or slightly bored. Very mixed emotions but had a good time.
