I really loved the food descriptions, the representation of grief through temporary loss of speech which proved that words are not always necessary and that love and care can also be conveyed via various actions, and also the tangled family dynamics.
The novel is a beautifully elaborate ode to cooking and depicts the miraculous ability of a lovingly cooked meal to literally transform a life, on multiple occasions. The Japanese countryside setting featuring lush descriptions of greenery and fresh fruits and vegetables, set an extremely cosy atmosphere that made me feel like I was there with Rinko.
However, since I'm not that fond of cooking, the food descriptions felt a bit repetitive at times hence the 4 stars.
