I ended up loving the book with the plot and exploring necromancy with bargaining, however, I have to say the summary may mislead readers as it’s not heavily focused on the romance between Hellevir and Sullivan. If the summary was more accurate or similar to the ARC I’ve seen online, I would ascribe this higher. Instead, docking some points for misleading expectations.
Based on the summary, I felt it was ascribed to more romantasy but it is definitely more fantasy and the romance is on the backburner. Hellevir’s feelings are drawn to Sullivan but I felt there wasn’t enough scenes to use their relationship as the primary plot element. Instead, the book primarily focuses on Hellevir exploring her nature with diving into Death’s domain and striking a deal with a dark mysterious figure. Each time Hellevir bargains to bring a soul back, it must be met with a cost which drives part of the plot. Each time Sullivan is raised, Hellevir loses part of herself.
Overall, I feel if you are opened to a book exploring a bargain-based magic system for Hellevir’s necromancy and fantasy royalty assassination plot, you may be into this. There are elements of nature-based magic vs. monotheistic religion which became interesting as well. But if you want a romance focused book, this would not be it.

This book gave me definite Percy Jackson vibes—not in a copycat way, but the underworld adventure theme felt familiar. There was potential in the setup, and a few moments echoed that same myth-meets-modern-world energy.
But overall, the story felt scattered. The plot jumped around too much, and I never quite got the sense that it all came together. Characters and events popped in and out without enough connection, making it hard to stay fully invested.
It wasn’t without charm, but in the end, it didn’t leave much of a lasting impression..

What did I just read?
This book was a bit of a mess for me. The plot felt all over the place—I kept waiting for it to settle into something coherent, but it never quite did. One minute I thought I had a handle on things, the next I was wondering if I’d accidentally skipped a chapter. (I hadn’t.)
The romance? Forced and painfully awkward. I just didn’t buy into the connection at all. It felt more like the characters were shoved together because the genre required it rather than any actual chemistry.
I really wanted to enjoy this one, but it ended up being more confusing than entertaining. Safe to say I won’t be continuing the series.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voayger for my DRC.

This is in great part because I can't deal with characters I cannot relate to at all when it comes to personality. The stars are for the good world building and great writing/
So spoilers?
If I can do something that's rare and extremely useful, YOU are the one listening to demands, not me. ''Oh you'll kill everyone if I don't do what you say? Sure, go ahead and do it, good luck finding another one of me. Oh you want to chain me in a dungeon and force me to do the thing? I can go into Death itself with just my mind, Queen Bitch, I'll kill myself and probably rule that place later. Bow down to ME, give me a castle, and no, you don't get to ask for shit. Die.''
I felt nothing when it came to the MC and the Princess. I ship them as much as I ship my girl friends with their useless boyfriends who don't even wash their asses
