If we were allowed to give half stars, this would be a 3.5. It was a good story, but it wasn't great. I love a fairy tale. A princess looking for her true... protected by flesh eating harpies.... This is the stuff dreams are made of! However, after a while... the story starts to follow all the other fairy tales. There's some sort of misunderstanding. The princess gets captured... must defeat the bad guy. While the story was entertaining... It fell a bit short.

I love queering fairy tales :)

So. This princess is locked in a tower. Protect by…a lot of supernatural shit. Like harpies! And fire!

Whoever rescues her and bestows upon her true loves kiss will break her spell (she cannot sleep) and gets to marry her. The woman who does rescue her thinks she’s a bit ridiculous (particularly when she finds out the truth behind the curse) and just wants to clear her name (self defense doesn’t count so much when you’re a beggar and you were defending yourself against a noble).

And I definitely enjoyed what development we saw of their relationship.

But it wasn’t great.

There were a lot of…Shrek-ish moments that made me laugh, but felt too much like This Has Been Done which um…yeah? They were cute, and I do enjoy taking the source material and turning it on its head, but the way they were said and stuff was way too similar to Shrek for my taste.

Also, it all moved way too fast. I really wish it had been slowed down, and we could have seen more of the growing relationship and how they grew to fall in love. It’s a short story, and I do understand that, but it all felt so rushed.
