i usually don’t give ya contemporaries 4.5 stars but this book actually deserved it. like the whole book was amazing i’m actually at a loss of words i loved it so much. the character and plot development was A+ and the suspense was too. it had so many hidden meanings to it too that are eye openers to life. amazing. amazing. amazing.

judging by the reviews, i thought this book would be beautiful, gut wrenching, and really meaningful. but what i got was a fault in our stars, trying to be deep type book, redeemed only by the end. i mean, this really could've been amazing, it had all the foundations to be, but it just fell short for me. i think the main reason for that is declans character. he was trying to be a bad boy, but really just ended up being a bit of a drama king (in an annoying way not a fun way) and a jerk with a "soft side

THIS ONE MADE ME CRY ): i really enjoyed reading this book!! it was interesting to see juliet and declan maneuver their ways around grief and guilt while simultaneously seeking each other for understanding. i loved the themes that were brought out during the story, they made me think real hard about how life truly can be seen as. the romance in this book was more of a subplot, in my opinion, and i wished the ending was less abrupt, but i loved the story regardless of that.

I finished reading this book last month and I planned to write a review for it and now I'm writing this 2 weeks later. I'm finally getting to writing a review for this book, and I'm glad because oh I have a lot to say.

I read this book in a few days. The time I spend to read isn't always reflective of how much I like a book, because sometimes circumstances can make me take longer to read a book despite really liking it, but in this case I really enjoyed this book, which is why I finished it in less than a week.

I saw this book mentioned in an online forum and the description for it already had my interest. I'm someone who really enjoys the concept of letters. I enjoy both writing and receiving them. I think that writing a letter to someone is such a personal way to address them, and I find letters cute. Because I enjoy the concept of letters so much and because I'm also someone who enjoys the romance genre, I decided to read this book. Like I said, the book description and the theme of letters already had my interest, but I still didn't expect to be so immersed in it. Once I began reading, it felt like I couldn't stop. I wanted to savor every moment of the book, but at the same time I also wanted to read through it quickly to find out what happened next as well as indulge in it more and more.

Where do I begin on what I liked about this book? If you couldn't already tell by now, I REALLY liked it; that's why it has earned a 5 star rating from me. First of all, I liked the prominent theme of "don't judge a book by its cover." I don't mean that in the sense that the cover of this book is unattractive, in fact I think the cover of this book looks amazing. I actually love how the flowers on the cover are made to look like they're made of paper with words written on them, it really suits the theme of the book. I mean that in the sense that in the book there are so many instances where various characters have a negative view of somebody despite barely knowing them. This can be seen in so many different ways, and one example of this is how one of the main characters is negatively viewed by many people for having a bad reputation when most people don't know him personally and don't know about the inner struggles he faces (I'm keeping this vague as I do not include spoilers in my reviews). Although the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" may seem cliche to some and it may seem unimpressive, I think the book portrayed this theme very well and I liked how clear it was. This theme is commonplace in real life as everybody judges, we all make judgements even if we don't want to. The judgements characters in the book made despite not knowing whats beneath other people's covers seemed very much like judgements people could make about others in real life and so I think the portrayal was realistic.

Next, something else I also liked was how the theme of death was incorporated and depicted in this book. In this book, some of the characters have lost their loved ones. A major subject in this book is how prior to the events of the book both the main characters have lost family members and it is because one of them lost their parent that the events of the book were able to unfold. I liked how the theme of death was incorporated in the novel in the sense that the emotional impact from experiencing the death of a loved one was really illustrated well. I have never experienced the death of a loved one so I can't personally relate to the characters like that, but I still found the way the author illustrated how difficult it was for the characters to move on from their family members death despite time passing to be very genuine. Even though it's said that time heals all wounds, there are some wounds that remain no matter how much time passes, and it's not easy to go forward without looking back. Not only did the author show how moving on from the death of a loved one was difficult, but I also liked how the author also showed how people could feel guilty after someone dies. Sometimes people feel guilty after someone they know dies because they can't help but think that they could have prevented their death somehow. I liked that the feeling of guilt was expressed in the book regarding someone's death.

Additionally, I loved the plot twists in this book. Although some parts of the book were predictable, it was clear that those specific parts were meant to be predictable since there was foreshadowing. Meanwhile, there were some plot twists in this book that I didn't see coming that really shocked me. It was those plot twists that really made me think...I can't believe this. I love a good plot twist, and the author was able to successfully evoke surprise in me. I didn't know what I was in for.

These are just a couple things about this book I liked, if I were to continue to say more this review would be way too long. In short, I liked the themes of "don't judge a book by its cover," death, friendship and romance in this book and how they were portrayed, the plot twists were interesting, the emotions were amazing, and this book was just a winner in practically every aspect.

Thank you Brigid Kemmerer. I loved this.

"am i stronger than you thought i was?"
"you're exactly as strong as i thought you were."

it was whatever. very much middle school book. i probs would have liked it nine years ago.

not sure how female authors manage to write horrible female main characters- says a lot about u babes.

the fmc is a horrible person. she's so judgemental and rude. why is she making assumptions about him because of the way he dresses and the rumors she heard? like what ur in high school.. be a better human being.

she would call him the most despicable names and then get mad at him for saying something nowhere near as rude as what she says. full of herself? spoiled? disgusting? that's her !

she DEADASS thought his car would smell- and i quote 'i expected the car to smell musty, like rotten foam padding, and too many cigarettes.'

description

her fake relationship with her mother makes me laff like she's so obsessed with her when she barely spent anytime with her before she died and pushing her dad away cus he grieves differently???

her wanting to be like her mother and take meaningful pictures actually made me laugh fr. she's buying a dress for the dance and this is what she says

'she was making a difference. what am i doing? buying a dress?'

YOU ARE SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD wtf r u gonna do????? stop the war?

if you expect to cry- don't bother with this lol.

I loved the premise of the book. I always think people are the most open and honest when they talk to someone they don't know and they cannot see. It's safer I guess. I just have one problem with the book, and it's that it has one of my most hated tropes in YA: bad parenting.

SpoilerI know people like that exist, but in YA they either stay bad or they become good in the last chapter. It's not believable or good enough for me. I need to see their journey too. I spent most of the book hating them so don't expect me to just forgive them because they said their sorry. Too little too late for me...

I really enjoyed it and it came at a time I needed an east read. But it was quite emotional and I felt for the characters.
