It was Darkling's back story -kind of - like one of his experiences in his long life which changed him.
I found myself intrigued and my heart reached for Darkling and Bhagra. And the fact that how hard it just have been for them to survive.
It was sad. But I enjoyed the story.

So this is a short novella around the world of the Grisha but mainly about the Darkling and his mother. A short glimpse of the Darkling's life, I may say centuries before his encounter with Alina.
He is a kid and tries to belong in the cruel world that don't accept the Grisha. In this story, he also faced dangers due to his power. I don't know if it's a story written in order to give excuses to the Darkling's cruel deeds. Would you excuse a sociopath for his crimes because he had a bad childhood? I don't know what was the point intended of this story.
It could have been a complete book about the life of the Darkling and his misfortune through time and the title could be "The beginning"or whatever, perhaps something in Russian. I would have read it because the Darkling was one of the best characters in the trilogy.

3.5* Ich weiß ja, dass es sich hier nur um eine kurze Vorgeschichte zum Dunklen handelt. Für meinen Geschmack, war sie dann aber doch ein wenig zu kurz.
