This novella was a good one. Maybe shorter than I would've liked, but a good one anyway. We got to see baby Darkling! Okay, maybe not a baby, but a child. Got to see his motivation and why he became so... Dark. You know, what I mean. Really glad I got to reading novellas, I usually quite enjoy them.
This is getting four stars because it was written well and we get a complete picture as to why the Darkling became who he is and why he created the monstrosities in the future. HOWEVER, I'm not nor have I ever digged the Darkling. There are major abusive behaviors that we should not romanticize and/or give reverence to.
With that said... it's baffling that his mother had the reaction she did in the future when you clearly see that he is exactly as she intended him to be and become. She is one of the primary reasons he is calculating and murderous. To be honest, I don't think he is capable of love.

Sarà perché adoro il Darkling ma questa novella mi è piaciuta molto, seppur assai breve! Vedere anche solo per poche pagine come ha dovuto vivere questo personaggio fin dal momento in cui è nato mi ha fatto tanta tristezza e, per certi versi, sono riuscita a capire di più perché sia diventato quello che è.

Very interesting short story, I wanted to know more of the Darkling since I read Shadow and Bone and here we have a short story if little Eryk (that's not the Darkling's real name, though)
