Bennett describes emotion with care and precision. The love and jealousy and loneliness her characters wrestle with are so, so real, as is the rumor mill of the ever watchful chorus of mothers.

For me, this was a 5 star for a big chunk of the book, but by the end I didn’t feel like it lived up to its potential.

Well written, sans cliches or a heavy-handed touch, and a story that swept me up - read this in less than 24 hours. An easy but substantial read that encompasses a mother's suicide, abortion, infertility, church, race, young love, lasting love, fidelity - and all with imperfect and wonderful characters.

This book was an interesting read, but not necessarily one of my favorites. The story follows the relationship between a teenage girl and a pastor’s son — and the resulting pregnancy, abortion, and cover-up — over the course of their adult lives. Their decision haunts everyone in the story, and kind of felt overdone to me.
