Absolutely wonderful. Esmeralda Santiago beautifully describes what it can feel like to be an immigrant.

Santiago's memoir about growing up in Puerto Rico and moving to New York with her mom and 8 siblings when she was a pre-teen. I loved Santiago's writing style.

Great book! I enjoyed the second half of the book better. The nuanced detail highlighted cultural differences and similarities after Esmerelda and her family left PR. The discussion of family dynamics was also engaging.

Esmeralda Santiago has written a wonderful memoir of her early, somewhat chaotic life in Puerto Rico and Brooklyn.

This book was so eye opening and Esmeralda's story was one of heartbreak and hope. Through this book I was able to understand what my ancestor's went through and learn more about my culture. A very beautifully written novel I will remember for years to come.

It was easy to read, and I enjoyed learning about the puerto rican/nuyorican experience. However it felt like a story I've read before.
