Wow! This is a powerful book that would be great to use with intermediate students to teach them about 9/11! A story of resilience and hope as one little girl tries to figure out what it means to be American and how her community can grow and heal! Very powerful....great book for the classroom!

Not sure how I felt about this one. I really had a hard time believing that Deja had NEVER heard about 9/11 from anyone as she was growing up until she landed at Brooklyn Collective.
However, her journey to understanding her father was heartfelt. I liked that speaking one's truth eventually prevailed; hiding is not productive for growth. Her shield of anger and meanness slowly dissolves, and I think kids will understand how that works. Deja's friends are drawn pretty well; her visit to Sabeen's home highlights the ridiculousness of hatred and fear regarding Muslims.
