I loved the illustrations of this book. I also really liked the basic plot of the story. At first the events in the story were a little simplistic, but it did pick up toward the main conflict. Overall, it was a cute little story.

'Gillbert the Little Merman #1' with story and art by Art Baltazar is a graphic novel for young readers about a group of fun creatures living under the sea.

One day, Gillbert was swimming along under the sea when he finds a note in a bottle. before he can look at the note, he is drawn in to another part of the ocean by a mermaid. Meanwhile, there is a possible invasion from outer space as sentient meteorites start heating the ocean. What will Gillbert do?

There is a lot of plot laid out here, and fortunately, it's an ongoing series. The art is classic Baltazar, meaning it's lots of fun. The story will hopefully tighten up over time.

Gilbert is a curious, merman prince living in the undersea kingdom of Atlanticus. In this graphic novel, we are introduced to Gilbert, his family, and friends. Sure to be a hit with the elementary school crowd! The fast pace of this introduction feels a bit rushed, but it is still a delightful and fun story. The colorful, playful artwork is outstanding. Looking forward to the next novel!

Gillbert #1 The Little Merman is about a creature named Gillbert who also happens to be the prince of the underwater city of Atlanticus. Gillbert finds a mysterious message in a bottle, which is the beginning of an otherworldly adventure involving other sea creatures as well as alien beings. The story is very fast-moving and will keep children interested with the non-stop action and adventure. The graphic novel/comic format will appeal to a variety of readers. The illustrations are vivid, colorful, and effectively add to the story, although at times they may be a bit too busy. There is a lot going on for a book that is so short, so young readers must pay attention or they will easily become lost.

I recommend this title for school and public libraries that aim to expand their selection of graphic novels for elementary students. In addition, this would be a great addition to home libraries of striving readers.

I received a free copy of this title from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The artwork pops off the page in fun colors and adorable creatures. I found the story inconsistent and occasionally difficult to follow, but thought the fiery space aliens were fun and wanted to rock out on the party subs .

Rating a story like this is difficult, because I think there’s an audience for it. It’s just not me.

This is an interesting tale about Gilbert who is a merboy. He receives a strange letter and makes some new friends. It is refreshing reading a comic where there is a happy family life. Gilbert meets mermaid, who is a different type of mer person then he is and there are aliens. It’s a fun little adventure tale. The artwork is a nice cartoon style that meshes perfectly with the story.

I give two stars because I thought that the art was cute and Gilbert was adorable. However, the story itself was chaotic. I wouldn't continue the series. #Gilbert1 #netgalley

The art is very visually appealing, but the story is lacking something— namely, any explanation of what is going on.
