If you are a thriller fan, you know Coben's signature style of intense plots with fantastic characters who have no shortage of sharp humor to go along with the intellect. This is no departure from form, and I was sucked into this story from the first page.

I also feel like a synopsis does no favors for thrillers, so all I will say about this one is that a past event from his college years comes hauntingly back to Sami Kierce, a former detective.

I loved this twisty story that gave another layer into Sami. I love this character and his reassembled life, not least of which is his banter-loving wife.

This suspense was quite unnerving. I loved the pace and multiple directions. It left me feeling like I was utterly inept at following clues and so glad I allowed this tale to pull me along.

I loved the audio, so expertly voiced by @vikasadam with all the tension and humor this story needed. I can only imagine how fun this was to read aloud!

Listed as second in seriesโ€ฆwith Fool Me Once as firstโ€ฆbut main character here is from movie version rather than book. Wonโ€™t be a problem reading as a stand-alone.

Everything wraps up at the end of the book.
Decent thriller, although a ton of trauma for main character!

I didnโ€™t enjoy the writing style of this book which is weird because Harlan Coben is one of my favourite authors.

The cliffhanger at the end about the potential child leads me to believe that there will be a third book that goes into looking for the child. Wonder if Sami is the next Myron in the series.

The first 20% of this book can be cut. Around 20-25% the story and hook finally arrive and then the book is interesting. Had I not had a great experience with this author many times before I would have quit.

Overall this was a steady but fast paced thriller that left you guessing or not sure you were guessing correctly. As always I loathe long winded confessions and the one at the end brought the whole book down for me, even though it had been fairly engaging prior.

Show donโ€™t tell and have the MC think it out if you must. I expect more/better from a writer like HC.

Thanks netgalley for my ALC

Lastly, I remembered nothing from book 1 and that didnโ€™t seem to affect me here. A real standalone. The ending suggests a book #3

SUMMARY: 40s Sami is a disgraced NYPD turned PI/professor. When he was 20ish backpacking through Europe he had a brief, whirlwind fling (5 days) with Anna . He thought Anna had died and worried about being arrested he fled. Now Anna has walked into his class. He follows her and finds out she is Victoria, the daughter of a very rich family that went missing for 11 years but after being โ€œfoundโ€ had never gone back to any sort of public life. So many questions!

There is also a side story about a former case and the man who killed Samis past flame which really didnโ€™t need to be included.
