Holy crap, the amount of feelings this book has created within my soul has yet to be replicated on this scale by any other book I have read so far. It was great to see Artyom develop and the world of the Metro grow with him. The ending was what I expected from Russian literature and hell it did not disappoint.

A little bit too much anthropological philosophizing on behalf of Glukhovsky, but overall a very solid sci-fi novel. There are a few too many instances of Artyom getting captured and then rescued right before being executed. And while it was charming the first time, by the third time you come to expect it, which dispelled a lot of the tension. Also, a very reasonable criticism of this book would be the complete lack of female characters. Not one woman is named and exists for more than one scene.
I liked the paranormal elements of the Metro, for which Glukhovsky did a great job making them feel completely incomprehensible to mankind without straight up feeling like it was magic bullshit. I also enjoyed how he weaved real Moscow locations into the novel to really make it feel like the novel had to happen there.
My favorite element of the book isKhan, whose half-insane dialogue and aggressively assertive personality was very entertaining.
Also, I am not a huge fan of the ending. I guess it's meant to be left to interpretation whetherArtyom's sudden realization that he is to be the bridge between the Dark Ones and humanity is real or just a trap laid by the Dark Ones. Regardless, they get destroyed the moment he has this revelation, and the book ends immediately after, so we don't get to see how anything plays out. The grim nature of this ending is definitely in line with the tone of the book, but I just don't love it.
