I’m so glad I finished this. So glad. Have I enjoyed it? It started off as a good read, yes. Did the author enjoy writing it? Yes, and probably a bit too much.
The writing in itself was not bad, but god, did it drag on. First there was this journey that began without a clear purpose, after the encounter with a stranger that never presented himself again. Our hero embarked upon an aimless trip that a) could have been 200 pages shorter, and b) led him through countless confusing tunnels and metro stations, that blended together and were, in no way, distinguishable from each other.
Second, it seems like none of the characters grow throughout the story – even Artyom has remained his old self, although wiser now, there was no room for personality development at all. The same thing accounted for all of the other characters, which were, by the way, tossed aside (killed or otherwise) without having contributed to the story.
Of course, the idea was great, but its execution a big letdown. I could have forgiven the endless amount of typos, but the complete absence of character development, the infinite philosophical rambling and the absurd encounters with cannibals and other odd creatures have degraded this promising story into a disappointment, at best.
I had planned to read the second part too (and I believe there’s even a third part?) but I’m no longer so sure about that.

Positive: The dark, unforgiving society and the claustrophobic atmosphere. Creepy place.
Negative: The different groups that the main character run into. Most of them are stereotypes that you've seen before, and they're too predictable. The use of cartridges as payment instead of money isn't credible since they should have run out of cartridges a long time ago.
