I came across Metro 2033 from the video game adaptation of the same. Though I didn't get far in the game, I was interested and intrigued by the setting of Metro 2033. A post-apocalyptic world which is a result of radioactive remains from the great war forcing the survivors to take refuge and learn to live in the elaborate metro stations which are the only safe place for people's survival. It's a dark, chilling and a horrifying story of the remnants of humanity. We are carried along the journey of Artyom and his quest. The growth of Artyom as a person and the impact of each event that takes place during his journey makes the reader think about the things that plague his mind. His journey shows us the lives of people in the Metro along all the stations, the thugs, the fascists, the weak and dying, the ones flourishing due to trade and advantages of their habitats. Artyom encounters numerous people with different believes and personalities who accompany him during his journey which cause changes in him as a person. Artyom's ideologies as a naive young man stuck in a place he never left changed throughout his journey. He tried to find the purpose of his existence and meaning of his life and what it means to him. The ending was chilling and horrific which made me rethink everything that had happened until the very end. It was a fun and engaging read.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Oliver Brod. I loved the narration, and it made consuming the story a much better experience. Oliver Brod's narration was spot on, and the characters came to life leaving me lost in the depths of the dark tunnels of the Metro as soon as I plugged in to listen in to the narration.
