This was a beautifully written and thoroughly researched fictionalised biography of the life of Belle da Costa Greene, personal librarian to JP Morgan. Belle makes the perilous decision to pass as white during the gilded age in New York, a period marked by particularly violent racial discrimination. This book is a portrait of an incredibly strong woman who cultivates her own version of freedom and power in a time when she should have access to neither, while acknowledging the precarious nature of her position and its reliance on the continued protection of her wealthy employer and the truth of her identity remaining hidden.

Great premise but measly execution. So long winding and unnecessarily elaborate it was impossible to continue, even though I tried my best.
