Solden’s “Women with Attention Deficit Disorder” is considered a trailblazing text for understanding how ADD/ADHD can present and manifest for AFAB folks under gender-based societal conditioning and expectations, at least in the United States/Canada. Solden herself has ADHD, which gives her a nuanced and relatable perspective. I especially appreciated the themes of withdrawal, sensitivity (emotional and sensory), exhaustion, and mental health. However, the copy I read was from 2005 (second edition), and this showed in Solden’s language, descriptions of women’s roles, and heteronormativity. I know she has written even more on ADHD, and I look forward to exploring more of her later work.

The book that helped me understand ADHD

THE book I'd recommend for any of my friends with ADHD. It really highlights the differences between typical ADHD cases ie male versus female and helped me open a dialogue with my therapist. The questionnaire really forced me to self reflect even though it took me days to do. I'm thinking of buying a physical copy so I can highlight and write in the margins things I need to remember.
