Morally ambiguous characters that I'm not sure how I feel about at the end. I almost liked this book, or could have liked it if the characters took different turns at the end.
I was reading this for a book club. I think I did this book a disservice by stopping it for a while. I just couldn’t get into it but might pick it up at a later date.
I found this an interesting book, but found it difficult to get into at times. It tells the story of Thaniel, a telegraphist at the home office. He receives a mysterious gift of an ornate watch, and when it warns him of a bomb, he seeks out the maker, the enigmatic Japanese watchmaker Mr Mori. The story seems to jump from one story line to another, although they are brought together well at the end. Pulley's writing style is very descriptive, which could detract from the story at times. The question of Mr Mori's secret and it's effect on him and those around was the most interesting part of the book.

oooo this was really well done and the premise was super interesting. i loved the quality of pulley's writing and thought this was engaging but i also think that (similar to novik's spinning silver and uprooted) it would've been a better match for me in print over audio. but i really enjoyed it and would definitely reread!
both this book and pepperharrow leave me so torn. on the one hand, everything about thaniel and mori really leave me gutted. on the other: what is the DEAL with the women in these books. can i just not handle hashtag strong women or are they oddly villainized & then sacrificed without care for their interiority. hard to tell!

The more I reflect on this book, the more I love it. At first I was put off by the confusion I had towards the genre and plot, but it grew on me. I really liked the way everything came together at the end. It will definitely make it onto my reread list.
