3.5*s, probably. This book is very captivating. It's extremely well written, intriguing and almost impossible to put down. Purely on the entertainment value, it fully deserves 5*s, and I will be looking into more of this author's books for the times when I need to lose myself in a book.
However, I felt a strange detachment from the characters, and although this story tried to engage my emotions, it didn't quite manage it — there was too much intentional manipulation behind the effort. Ironically, or, perhaps, predictably enough. After all, the book is all about the long game of manipulating the future to construct the desirable reality.
I was also bothered by the fact, that the book was too narrowly focused on a very small world of the few main characters and only hinted at the world beyond, but the hints kept sparking my interest, which was then left unsatisfied.
But the main reason why this is not even a 4* book for me is the consistently negative, if not outright hostile or hateful representation of all women in the book. The seething animosity took me by surprise and left an unpleasant aftertaste. I hope it's not a consistent feature in all of this author's books.

this is a beautifully written story with interesting and robust characters. you spend much of the book not entirely sure where it's going but fascinated by the details none the less. personally, I was rather disappointed where it ended up. it seems to me there was a lot going on that let up to very little.

im very confused. I don't know what I think about this. It makes sense that this is Natasha Pulley's debut, it has some aspects of her later writing but it feels, to me at least, very messy.
I spent a great part of this in absolute confusion at what was happening. I don't know whether it's because the fantasy world went right over my head or if I wasn't paying enough attention but I really struggled with this.
I liked some aspects, other things disturbed me a little bit. I didn't like Grace, she had a bit of that not like other girls attitude which I can't deal with. Except for Thaniel I didn't truly connect with anyone and even him was a bit shaky.

Thaniel jobbar som kontorist och får höra att ett bombhot är utfärdat, men klockslaget kommer och går. När han går in på en pub börjar plötsligt fickuret han mystiskt hittat på sitt rum att låta högt och han går ut för att få det att sluta. Då briserar bomben. Han lyckas återfinna urmakaren, och en ny sorts relation utvecklar sig mellan den vanliga brittiske kontoristen och den japanska urmakaren med en robotbläckfisk. Men när Thaniel får ett äktenskapsförslag från en brittisk aristokratisk kvinna, måste han göra ett val han helst inte vill. Ska han lämna det gamla livet för att påbörja ett nytt, eller stanna där han är bekväm?
Vissa böcker vill man läsa bara för att man älskar omslaget. Det här är definitivt ett sådant för mig. Jag är så förtjust i omslaget och när jag har läst boken älskar jag att det berättar så mycket som är centralt men samtidigt inte alls för mycket.
Jag visste inte riktigt vad jag skulle förvänta mig när jag började läsa den här boken, men i slutändan blev inget alls som jag trodde. Jag tycker om det nedskalade persongalleriet och tidshoppen. Jag gillar både Thaniel och Mori som karaktärer och tycker också om den aristokratiska kvinnan. Pulley lyckas visa på svårigheter som fanns på 1800-talet i klasskillnader och könsskillnader samtidigt som det är en otroligt fantasifull berättelse. Det övernaturliga och oförklarliga vävs in i det vardagliga och historiska på ett sådant sätt att det känns otroligt och trovärdigt på en och samma gång, oerhört snyggt gjort. Och slutet kunde jag inte räkna ut på långa vägar. Det gillade jag verkligen.
Översättningen av Sissela Uisk är bra och flyter på, men boken är ändå lite svårläst om man inte läser mycket i taget så man hinner vänja sig vid hur sättningen av boken är gjord. Jag hade önskat en annan formatering och andra marginaler för att det skulle bli lättare att läsa, men som sagt vänjer man sig efter ett tag.
Jag vill också ha en strumpsamlande bläckfisk, vilket jag inte visste alls att jag villhövde innan jag läste den här boken.

There were a few things I liked about this book, so I’ll start there. The atmosphere of Britain in the 1880’s was pretty well conveyed. I wasn’t around then, but the setting felt like I imagined Britain to be at that time. I only imagined white British people to be the residents and shopkeepers in the 1880’s so introducing local Japanese living there was a new idea to me. The pace of the story was slow through the first 75%, and this was a little annoying but I imagined it reflected the reality of the time. And the apparent clairvoyance of Mori was super interesting, and I was eager to see where it took us. Then at about 75% the wheels came off and we were suddenly facing action, explosion, police involvement, sexual surprises, and maybe magical realism. A bit much, and didn’t feel consistent with the rest of the story. I like good action stories but I just didn’t buy the ending quarter.
