I adored it. I want a clockwork octopus.
Moderate: Racism, Violence, Xenophobia
Minor: Gun violence, Death of parent, Injury/Injury detail
I really wanted to like this book. It's a bit of a slow burn, feels well written, and at half way through I was convinced that I was enjoying it. Then it all seemed to unravel furiously towards the end, in a way that I really did not enjoy - I felt sucker punched. I put the book down for 2 days to sulk before finally making myself finish it. The ending was slightly redeeming but overall I was a little disappointed.

Really, really engaging book! Very cool time period that I don't normally read. I dove immediately into the second book because I wanted so much more!

This book definitely sneaks up on you. It's an insanely slow burn, but once it catches it doesn't stop til all your feelings are ashes and the world around you seems as full of naked possibility as a forest after a wildfire. It's sharp and bright and lovely and confusing and full of color, and as with all my favorite books, I can already tell I'm going to lose sleep over it.
To say almost anything about the plot is to spoil the book, but it basically amounts to a series of intense and at times unforgiving character studies, sprinkled with the pixie dust of magical realism and then dropped down in the middle of a philosophical debate about free will. (There is also a kleptomaniac clockwork octopus named Katsu.)
It's glorious. It's touching. It's upsetting. It's riveting. It's messy. I'm a mess. Please read it. I need someone to talk to about it. Help.

The thing that gets me the most about Watchmaker is Mori feeling like he must endure every horror in order to get some happiness. Squeezes me deep.
