challenging dark emotional mysterious sad tense

A feminists nightmare. An intriguing premise but I understand why this is a book for A levels. The ending was vague.

As with other Atwood novels, this is very readable and I definitely stayed up later than I should have because I wanted to know what was coming next.

It was sad, disturbing, troubling and compelling. I was invested in the lives of all of the characters and I liked the way Atwood was able to describe the events leading up to this new world, without taking the reader out of the atmosphere she’d created.

Although an easy-read, it is of course, a novel with many difficult themes - it’s about religion and religious persecution, the right-wing, slavery, sexism and misogyny, and more. But the reason it succeeds so well as a novel, is that it’s about one woman in particular (Offred) and you really care about her, and about how these themes impact her life.

I think that this is a book that could definitely be re-read many times and that you’d get more out of it each time.

The I'm-won't-tell-you-what-happened-but-I-will-give-subtle-references-every-now-and-then-to-make-you-curious-because-that's-a-great-way-to-build-tension style of writing annoyed me from the beginning and so did the main character. The government take-over would have needed more explanation to seem probable; the history notes fell short. I think I would like other novels on how quickly society can change and oppression and dictatorship can arise but this simply didn't work for me.
