I can't understand the hype behind this book. To me the story was pretty flat, it was going nowhere. And the plot was so hard to believe. What was the point of Wives? How are people earning money? Why aren't most of the Handmaids pregnant if that was their purpose?
2017 Read Harder Challenge: Read a book you’ve read before.
I started listening to this a week after the election. I've been going in fits and starts with this because a day would hit where this all felt too real and I couldn't continue.
I'm adding on a star. I first read this when I was 14. I remember opening it and ultimately wanting more action (I think I was wanting the Hunger Games series back then). However it's lingered well in my memory, and I was well aware of its technical skill.
This go around it is so much more relevant. I'm 30 now. Over twice the age I was then. 16 years have ensued where- like a lot of women- I've dealt with the death of a thousand cuts from patriarchy. (Yes! I'm going to use the word patriarchy!) Street harassment, degrading nicknames, unasked for commentary on my body, being "the crazy ex-girlfriend," slurs, being touched without permission. All under the backdrop of many attempts, politically, to codify the objectification of women.
I've been called a bitchy feminist too, as you can probably tell. As you might be thinking.
In many ways I've had it easy as a woman. But I've seen what my female friends have gone through. I've seen what complete strangers have gone through. The world portrayed in this book is not unthinkable.
It was odd rereading this book in light of what's going on and I had to take my time. But I'm glad I took that time.
