4.5 stars — a charming story with a lot of the spirituality stuff I really enjoy: animals spirits, parallel realities, magic. It’s nice to look at the world through different eyes and imagine possibilities.

This was such a sweet and heartwarming book. The writing style was simple and I’m sure intentionally imitated oral storytelling style. I definitely preferred the parts that took part in the Reflecting World and wished the story centered more around their lives there - I’d definitely read a sequel of Oli looking for his siblings. The parts on Earth were a bit more far fetched and the simplicity of writing style contributed to making our world feel flat while it enhanced the Reflecting World. I was worried about how it would resolve, and while it was a bit convenient I was satisfied and glad it didn’t go in my imagined directions. I think this book is a bit more middle grades than YA but I would love to read it aloud with children in the future.
Very happy my school district gave this out for free to our students!

I'm not going to rate this book because it was very clearly not for me. Modern fantasy set in this world. Child protagonist. Clearly a book for a younger audience. I see why it won an award but it wasn't quite my cup of tea. I would recommend it to parents who want to introduce their kids to environmental issues
