This book was super quick to read, and that was due to the writing style being super easy to absorb. Many words were repeated and phrases as well making it feel more like a poetry novella type book. And I think that it may be in part due to the fact that it was translated from French to English. So reading something like this was new to me and very enjoyable. It was a raw and honest story with a perspective like none Id ever read before. I would recommend. Like I said, first time I’ve read something like this. Nothing crazy unheard of— but a unique time period, and perspective of being black and fighting for France in WW1. Overall very enjoyable read

I really liked the beginning of this book and I loved the prose throughout. But around midway I just lost interest and I really hate
a vague ending
. I would certainly recommend for the writing alone.

this was… excruciating. very, very excruciating

god’s truth, the repetition of certain phrases and even entire sentences was far too much for me. i know, i understand that it probably had a thematic purpose, but i truly could not care less. god’s truth, it only felt like padding to make this story that could’ve been 50 pages 3x that long. i know, i understand that this book is technically probably very, very good; i’m sure it could be studied in a college course. so this is definitely a case of it just not working for me personally :)

also, this felt too…. masculine for me lol. all the “more-than-brother” sh*t, the violence, and the handling of women was just icky to me
