A great read. Fun, engaging, mysterious and dramatic but never takes itself too seriously. Great world building, although we only see it in glimpses - I enjoyed how the setting reveals itself more and more as the book goes on. The relationship between the two main characters drives the book but the plot is also very complex, and at times a bit hard to keep track of - having read this book twice I’m still not sure I followed everything that went on! Part of this is due to the POV character being oblivious to most of the complexities of the plot, which helps to keep readers in the dark; not an unreliable narrator so much as a clueless one, which I enjoyed but did make it hard to follow at times. The middle section of the book also drags a bit. What really made the book special for me was the unique narration style, which I think could probably come across as annoying and cringy to some readers but which I found very charming. I listened to this on audiobook before I read it, which added to the experience immensely - very highly recommended.

I found the first half of this book so tedious that if it had not been a book club book I would have DNF’ed it.

I agree with other reviewers that it picked up in the second half but I didn’t love the way it ended. Hopefully things take a turn for the better in the second two books of this series but I feel like a break is necessary before attempting them.

Lesbian necromancers in space, anyone ? That premise might sound too good to be true, but that book delivers. It is a wild ride, so dark and so fun at the same time.
Gideon was born in the Ninth House, a decrepit place full of decrepit people. She can’t wait to get out but when she finally makes an escape plan things don’t quite go according to plan and she ends up playing bodyguard for the Reverend Daughter, heir to the House, instead. In addition, they are invited to what is basically an escape game with candidates from the other eight houses in a weird palace in which things will definitely not go according to plan.
This book is so unique and, once again, pure fun. I giggled at the author’s way of describing things and people. Sure, over 18 characters were way too much for my tired brain to compute, but even then I had a great time following grumpy Gideon and grumpier Harrow (or the reverse — who knows who’d win a grumpy contest between those two). This book is filled to the brim with badassery, but also with heart, and it scratched an itch I didn’t know I had.
Rep: go lesbians !

Muir has perfected a use of the English language so animated and vibrant that I at times wondered if there was real-life magic at play. I've never met characters so strongly detestable and yet so loveable precisely because of their awfulness, and I've never been so thoroughly surprised in a way that makes so much sense. It also contained a surprising amount of murder mystery. This is one of the best books I have ever read and not just because I cried myself ugly at the ending.
