An enjoyable read overall, but I think that the author didn’t exactly succeed in doing what she wanted to do. There are some really interesting world building elements that just aren’t explored but would have added greatly to the book. I’m told the world building is more fleshed out in the second book, but we’ll see.

Additionally, I started out not caring for Gideon – I feel like the author simple gave me no reason to like her other than witty sarcasm (which I love, but doesn’t make for a compelling character on its own).  Eventually, I was too drawn into the plot/mystery of the book to put it down just because I disliked the main character.

Overall, I’m glad I finished the book and have even started the second one, but I think the hype around this book is more than it deserves.

Necromantic battles are just as awesome as they sound. Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the mysterious plot.

I HATED Harrowhark when I started, and I am so glad she managed to change my mind.
The worldbuilding was heavy and at times confusing, but the dialogue was engaging and refined and the fight scenes were cinematic.

I had already added this book to my list for this year when my half sister recommended it. She said “I’m on my third read through of the series. On your first read through you basically won’t understand anything until after.” Which is advice I’m glad I had coming in. I now understand why she said that. There are mystery stories where you know from the jump what’s happened and watch as the characters figure it out. There are mystery stories where the protagonist knows more than the reader and explains everything at the end. This is neither. We know what Gideon knows. Nothing more(in fact somewhat less).

Every time I thought this book couldn’t shock me it did. I can’t wait to read the next one.
