This is without a doubt one of my new favorite books. It just checks too many boxes for me; I'm not used to this.
I was a little afraid because everyone was talking about how they didn't know what was going on for the entire time. So I thought the story would be too confusing and too difficult to follow. Which it wasn't. Sure, there were things I didn't understand immediately—some world-building details. But overall, I think, the story was very easy to follow, the pacing almost perfect, and I constantly kept going without getting bored at any point. It helped that the characters are amazing and their humor hilarious. I was not expecting to laugh out loud this often. I now understand that not knowing what is going on has to do with the mystery in the book. Everything is a big mystery, and we get crumbs but don't know what they're leading to and why. I LOVED that; it made the story quite unpredictable.
In the beginning, we get a lot of scene setting, and it was one of my favorite aspects of the book. The setting is SO cool. It's basically a lost place, and the vibes reminded me of The Starless Sea and Piranesi. AND Heaven's Vault, actually, which is one of my most favorite games ever. Maybe others might find the descriptions of the place too boring and extensive, but I was eating them up. My brain was producing all those pictures in my head; I was in heaven. On the other hand, and this is my only critique, the ending dragged too much for me because it was just 50 pages of constant fight scenes. Sigh.
So, I loved the atmosphere, the characters and their dynamics, the writing!!! Omg, the writing is next level, and Tamsyn Muir is a genius. Not only because of the humor and banter but also clever, beautiful and impactful sentences in between. This sounds like a lot of vibes, and yes, there are a lot of vibes, but there is also a lot of plot, actually. I didn't know anything about the story going in, and I loved all the surprises it had in stock for me. There is gore, though, and some creepy horror elements, so be warned. We do get a lot of answers, in the end. But there are still some unanswered mysteries left, and I can't wait to continue the series.

When i read this, my brain was too fried at the end to actually rate it but i think it's just gotta be a five star. I still haven't really sorted it out in my brain but I'm sure I will reread it and find that I have to absolutely agree with the 5 stars.
