I enjoyed it well enough. Harper is a typical YA protagonist in actions and thoughts. Some of the other characters should have been developed more. I also think the book could have been shorter. Not sure if I'll continue the trilogy or not.

Though it was a bit hard to start reading the beginning, it started getting good after that and it honestly got me hooked lol. I would have given it a 5 star if it wasn't for the beginning, but overall I really liked the book :))

It wasn't until I was over halfway through that I learned this was a retelling of the beauty and the beast--despite it literally being on the cover. I know, I'm the worst.
I've yet to read any fantasy-esque books with a disabled main character, and I really appreciated that representation. Harper has cerebral palsy and a bit of a limp as a result. I don't have cp, but I have a limp from other conditions, and it was pretty cool seeing a badass mc that has a limp. Admittedly in the beginning I didn't like Grey or Rhen, but they grew on me. This book was really good, and the whole series was on the buy 2 get the 3rd free table at books-a-million, and I'm glad I got the whole series because I'm about to sit my happy ass down and read the second one until I fall asleep tonight.

I thought the book had an ingenious spin on “Beauty and the Beast” and that Harper was an incredibly compelling protagonist. But I became disinterested at times when it became about war strategy and political affairs without a lot of heart into the social underpinnings of these issues. I disliked Rhen, not because he was poorly written, but because I dislike moody, noble male characters. I really wanted more Zo, who we only get to meet toward the end. Lilith is delicious. Her back-and-forth with Harper is great. The themes of choice and consequences are kind of didactic, but it’s written in a way that makes it seem natural for the characters to elucidate them. But honestly, I read the preview and I had higher hopes. I might be being too critical but I still quite enjoyed this book. Do you dare seek what lurks in Ironrose Castle?
