Highly readable tales of mediaeval derring-do and old ideas of the good life. Gets better and fuller as you progress. And although Steinbeck never completed his rewrite of Malory he does leave us the letters describing his own literary adventure.

Not what I was expecting.

Theme of men are stupid and women are evil over and over and over again. I thought it would be much more romantic with brave men and women worthy of the fight. Not so much.

It would have been more enjoyable if he'd finished it...

Steinbeck sticks closely to Mallory’s version of things, but he does work to elucidate some things and occasionally adds his own embellishments. I greatly enjoyed reading his letters to his editors, and I appreciate his efforts more after doing so. I don’t think I necessarily gained more from this than I already got from Malory, but Steinbeck’s “translation” into more modern language is definitely more accessible than Malory.
