this book was interesting. but i couldn't get used to the stream of consciousness. i will even agree it was a good device to use for the novel. just wasn't for me.

4.5 stars

This book is incredible. The only reason I took .5 stars off is the writing style, which is tough when dyslexic.

This book was a little hard to get through in the begining due to the absence of apostrophes and the overstylised dialogues but once you get used to it, it's a book is hard to put down. This whole book reads like the progresion of abusing a drug. The initial anticipation, the onset, the high, the low and the eventual fall. Gathering from the title of the book you know exactly what is going to happen but you are still sucked into this devastating labrynth of watching people you like, want to like or even exasperate sucked down into the drain.

3.5 ⭐️

A completely devastating read. Technically my second time reading this book as I originally read this when I was in high school I think. I remember watching the movie and having to read this book and devouring it, it was one of my favorite books and movies at the time.

Still to this day it is one of the more upsetting books I’ve read, the descriptions of the different effects and outcome of addition in women, white vs black men, and the elderly in this time period and how their hopes and dreams are crushed before they can even begin.

Loneliness and the feeling of not belonging, finding something to finally find your peace is something that is so terrifying about this book. All these people just wanted the “American Dream”, they wanted to build a business, a family, connection and all of that taken away from them, or maybe never meant for them because of where they came from within the system.

I think everyone should read this book though I didn’t like it nearly as much as when I read it the first time. It is a difficult read, the writing is famously confusing with little indication of who is speaking it takes longer to get through. I felt like the beginning dragged out, with Harry and Tyrone’s story bleak and boring at times, which made me feel less affected this time around, I’m not sure why. The ending as always, devastating. Sara’s story in particular.

Now I want to watch the movie again

This book was sad and bleak and left me feeling hopeless about not only our society but also parts of my own life. It was such a gut wrenching kind of story that felt like it was real and that I was watching it play out right in front of me. It felt like a dark underbelly of society bubbling right underneath the surface came out and I was forced to look at it.

I’m not sure I would recommend this book to anyone unless they were looking for rock bottom. It was a good read.
