DID NOT FINISH

I didn't even finish the book.
I'm sorry! I just can't read, much less enjoy, something that I can't really understand because all of the punctuation is missing. I know that it is supposed to be thought provoking, but I still like having the quotation marks so that I know when one person stops talking and another starts.

I decided to read this after watching the movie and it did not dissapoint! Even though the language is difficult to get accustomed to at first, and the first half of the book feels fairly slow-paced, I still really enjoyed it.

I think the highlights of the book are Sara and Marion's stories. The issues the women face feel so much more complex and I wish there was more time dedicated to them. Seeing what Sara goes through at her age is devestating, and you can't help but empathise with her desperation. Marion's story is also really heartbreaking, as you watch her slowly lose her passion and talents to her addiction despite everything she had going for herself.

I will definitely be reading more of Hubert Selby Jrs. books!

So many mixed emotions for this read.

Firstly, the unhinged and chaotic nature of the writing style made my eyes bleed. Minimal punctuation and lack of broken up dialogue was difficult to read. I understand that the author wanted us to feel the disjointed nature of addition through said style, but it was still a tough read.

Secondly, watching anyone (including fictional characters) plummet into the abyss caused by drug addiction is heartbreaking. This is a heavy and triggering read for anyone who has experienced that darkness first or even second hand.

Overall, I’m impressed that anyone can write about these circumstances. They’re taboo subjects, but unfortunately incredibly real for a lot of people in our world, country, state, city, neighborhood, and even our own homes. Bringing light to the ugliness of addiction is difficult but necessary.
