I especially loved the illustrations in this lovely children's poetry book about animals and plants near the pond, starting and ending with the red-winged blackbird. At the end of the poetry section author David Elliott explains little pieces of information about each of the animals and plants highlighted in the poems. I am sure my grandson would love this book especially about the polywog who turns into a frog. Wonderful.

I read this because it was a Cybils award nominee in the poetry category. It was nice but maybe not what I was expecting from award nominated poetry. In many ways it is similar to other picture books exploring an ecosystem (in this case a pond) but sometimes used rhyming or alliteration. There is back matter with nonfiction facts about each creature which got a poem.

Probably not a great story time read but a beautifully illustrated picture book about pond animals.
