When I bought in, I really liked it, but I kept going in and out of buying in.
This book was interesting to a cretain extent. There were some parts that I questioned. But otherwise I loved this book.
I'll admit, I didn't really understand Finn at first. Maybe it's because I started this as an audio book (mistake), or maybe he really did evolve throughout the novel. The story was fun, Finn being the most interesting character, but it left me wanting. More world building, more from mysterious Roza, from the scarecrow. I felt there was too much explained by "magical realism - I do what I want".
very good book! a little skimp on heavy details, but i enjoyed the magical realism and the characters.
I loved the beginning - I had to know more about the misfit in town, Finn. As I listened to this one on CDs in the car, I knew it was good when I had to go back a bit (due to an ambulance down the street) or stay in the car before going in for work. I had to try to keep track of all that was going on, however. Fantasy world mixed with reality is tough for me when it’s not defined clearly. I grew to love Rosa and Finn, and understand Sean (Shawn?) and P.D.. Bone Gap will forever haunt my thoughts when I consider losing a loved one.
Pretty good! Magical realism always throws me off a little bit but I think the story is well constructed.
3.5 stars.
Finn's life isn't bad, but it's far from perfect - his father died when he was a kid, his mother ran off and left him in the care of his older brother (who dropped out of college to take care of him), and nobody takes him seriously - even when he's the only witness to the kidnapping of a local woman (who may or may not have been involved with his brother). But he has a best friend, some pets, and a girl he likes who actually might like him, too. Life in the small town of Bone Gap might not be too bad, after all.
I liked this book, I really did, but I didn't realize that it was Magical Realism until almost to the end, which made it seem a little more contrived than it might have if it was presented earlier in the story. Ok, yes, one character says the corn stalks whisper to him, but that could have been a personality quirk.
