To be honest, I had no clue what this book was about when I first picked it up. I saw some people talking about it on Twitter and was immediately enthralled and curious to find out more about it. Let me just tell you ... one of the best decisions I've ever made. Really.

Bone Gap is a mysterious, utterly confusing but highly enjoyable book that will keep you guessing about what's actually going on throughout the whole book. No boring moments, no plot holes (at least not obvious to me) and no cringe-worthy romances or anything like that. Instead it captivates you with brilliant, well fleshed-out characters that are all so different and weird/funny/sweet in their own way so by the end of it you'll love (almost) everyone.

The beautiful writing is another huge bonus because, seriously, I couldn't get enough of it. Laura Ruby definitely knows how to write things so they sound beautiful and lyrical. I loved it! The characters and plot line were both incredibly interesting and just felt whole to me ... you know what I mean? Yes, I was confused most of the time and had no clue what's actually happening but that's exactly what I needed. It's what this makes a great book! And in the end everything makes sense. You get this "Ahaaa!" moment when it clicks and every puzzle piece finds its place - which feels amazing, by the way.

But speaking of characters ... let's start off with Finn. He's seen as the weird guy, a bit crazy and no one really takes him seriously but actually ... he knows a lot of things. It's just that no one believes him and if everyone thinks you're crazy ... maybe it's true? Finn is a brilliant character - the way he changes throughout the book made my heart swell with pride and happiness because HECK YES! I knew he's the brave and clever guy no one wanted to see. And our beloved Petey? Oh man, where do I even start? She's an "ugly" girl, tough and brutally honest with a sharp tongue which I loved. Also, she's raising bees and while I do hate all (buzzing) insects I was so fascinated and intrigued by her.

Then there's Sean, Finn's bigger brother, who's quiet and composed and so in love with Roza. Speaking of Roza ... she's probably one of the most important things of this book. She's been kidnapped - which Finn saw but no one believed him - and is an incredible character on her own. I loved her right from the beginning. Her story, her background ... she's just great.

To not spoil anything, I won't go into more detail. Are you curious? You wanna know more about speaking corn, horses, honey and bees? You want to read a book with characters that you'll love and a storyline so confusing (in a good way!) but interesting which will keep you hooked till the very last page? Then go pick up Bone Gap IMMEDIATELY. It's worth it, trust me.

Despite my reading slump I finally managed to finish this amazing book, wohoo! It was beautiful. I loved the writing and couldn't get enough of all the great characters even though I was confused most of the time (which is totally normal, really).

This book was difficult for me to get into. I’m not really sure why. I just kept zoning out and having to reread passages in the first few chapters. But once the story got going, I really loved it.

Lovely, lovely book. Quite surprising, interesting and with well-done magical realism. My only quibble is a bit of a saggy middle with too much of a document dump -- but she recovers nicely and it's really a wonderful read.

I flew through this. It was a super quick read, and I definitely enjoyed it and I loved all of the characters. The writing is really beautiful. The plot was easy enough to follow. But at the same time, I can't help but feel like I just didn't quite...get it? I must be missing something. Something about this book makes me feel like the themes just flew right over my head.

This book is part fairy tale retelling and magical realism. I love all the characters, but Petey and Roza are the best. When their looks one being incredibly beautiful and the other being "ugly" mixes in with these strong female characters. The main character Finn is really interesting. I knew from an early start what his problem was about not being able to describe the man who took Roza. That may be because I've read a few books both fact and fiction about his problem. The only part I disliked was the fact that to see him as a person he has to do something heroic. Not that I'm discounting his heroic deeds but to stop belittling him by calling him deragatory names he has to "prove" himself "worthy" of kindness and being treated like a normal towns person. Otner tnan that a good fast read.

not quite what i was expecting, but definitely still an enjoyable read!

A great story about the quirks and mysteries of small town life. Not 5 stars because the magic realism element is inconsistent throughout.

This was a great book but very hard to explain. My best description is magical realism but that's not all it is. It has some mystery and thriller elements. And the plot is very fairy-tale like. It is excellent and I would recommend it to upper Middle School and High School (some very vague sexual things but nothing graphic).

First off: What? Like, really...what is this book?
Second: I really liked it! It was twisty and weird and I really don't even know. I would think something didn't make sense, but then it would come back and and be (sort of?) explained.
In the end, I really liked it. It's definitely one that will stick with me.
