Bone Gap

this stands out among the teen fiction i've read for having fascinating characters and a unique plot. the magical realism element wasn't my favorite. the things that happened in the end, when finn went into bone gap, seemed so random and nonsensical to me. but again, i really liked the characters (especially Roza) and wanted to find out what would happen to them.

Maybe I'm a sucker for quirky love stories (OK, not maybe, I am), but I really liked what this story had to say about beauty, blindness, what you notice in the world around you. Finn and his town-hero brother Sean have been miserable since Rosa, the beautiful and battered girl who appreared mysteriously in their barn disappears just as suddenly. Finn knows that Rosa didn't run away, that she was taken by a mysterious man whose face he can't remember, but no one believes him--not even Sean. Petey, the scorned "ugly desperate girl" down the road might just have the key to what Finn is overlooking. Also, why is Finn's best friend convinced the corn is sentient? And where did this random horse come from?

Not the book for you if you dislike unexplained magic and ridiculous small towns, but a really fun read otherwise.

This one took me a really long time to get through, but not necessarily in a bad way. A lot of people really loved this book and there were aspects of it that I really liked, but as a whole it seemed like it was missing something to put it all together. Or maybe I missed something. Very cool concepts here though.

This was such a strangely beautiful and important read. Magical realism seems to be a hit or miss for me but this book did it so well, I really enjoyed myself.
mysterious medium-paced

It tried to be whimsical and I was interested at first but then it got boring and confusing. But I liked some of the commentaries and Roza was an interesting character to read from

Not sure if I loved the story but loved the way it was told.

Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for magical realism and mystery. It has a diverse cast of characters in terms of personality and strong female characters. It talks about topics and or conditions that some can relate to. It is a coming-of-age story and the layout of the book is unique as it intertwines different characters' stories going back and forth with different perspectives.

I loved this book. It's a great blend of magical realism and moral compass fiction. The themes of appearance both positive and negative are combined to knit together a brilliant story that is heart warming and scary.
