Bone Gap

"He was sorry that Bone Gap seemed to be cursed somehow, big losses salted with tiny tragedies almost too insulting to bear. Years ago, the police chief's wife stuck a Post-it on the fridge to tell him she was leaving and that she was taking the dog. After Jonas had one too many ciders, he'd talk about how that dog visited him in dreams and told Jonas that he lived in the desert now, that the sand was hot on his feet, and it was getting harder to remember the smell of rain."

I read this lovely, quirky book on the recommendation of my 13 year old daughter. She called it a love story in a love story in a mystery, which pretty much sums it up!

3.5, it was ok but I've read much better magical realism books with better plots and easier to follow. I did like the characters though, very interesting little town.

I got this book at the library for my daughter to read, and I thought I'd read the first few pages and ended up getting hooked. It's a strange sort of book with some really good characters and interesting prose. It reminds me a little of A Wrinkle in Time. It has a fantasy element that would really appeal to teens, as well as plenty of action and likable characters.

This book wasn’t my favorite. It felt all muddled and as if the author herself didn’t know what she was trying to say. The book was trying too hard to be a mystery, but also a teen romance, but also a surreal fantasy and it didn’t quite fit the bill for any of those genres. Overall, it was a mess and I didn’t like or relate to any of the characters. Personally, I wouldn’t reread or recommend.

I'm having trouble finding the words to describe the beauty of this book. This was one of the most unique and incredible books I've read in my entire literary life. Where do I even begin?

Okay, Bone Gap is a mixture of genres--there's this heavy element of mystery and wonder, alongside a few layers of magical realism. But this is also an amazing story that shows the development between a variety of characters that are so incredibly unique and flawed and wonderful, and UGH, SO GOOD.

These characters were just fantastic. I could use just about every adjective in the world to describe these characters. They held so many layers, and they were so real. It's been much too long since I've really connected with a character, but in Bone Gap, I connected with everyone.

Oh, and the writing. Laura Ruby, you are a genius. This writing style was so poignant and beautiful, so thought-out and yet so natural. Ruby created a gorgeous and unique world and filled it with a town of astounding characters. She has this way of weaving together these words with such grace, then leaving you writhing for more.

When I was about 80% through and there was only 30 minutes left to read, I was bummed. And I can't remember the last time I was disappointed that a book was almost over.

This book is strange and unique and amazing. If you haven't read it, PLEASE GO READ IT.

Gorgeous prose, unforgettable characters, and unexpectedly creepishly awesome bits to boot. If you want an example of excellent writing, put this on the top of your list.
