Bone Gap

Bone Gap, Illinois, though not apparent at first, is a town with gaps that lead to strange worlds. It is populated with a varied and wonderful cast of characters full of depth and weirdness and complicated relationships. It's a well-written and well-paced story that I would recommend to people looking for something new, weird, charming, heart-racing, good.

I never had any idea what was going on. It was good though.

I really liked the writing style and enjoyed the book immensely at first but then it started to get super weird by the "Storming the Castle" chapter. There's a lot of magic or surreal aspects that are thrown in that kind of send you in a loop, because it feels like a completely real story. I felt like it was also a bit dragged out I just wanted to see the conclusion. I really loved all of the characters and the plot was great, just very strange. It was okay. It didn't keep me on my toes like other mysteries, but the writing made up for it a bit.

It's hard for me to really describe how I feel about this book. It is very well written and the language is beautiful. It started slow for me but once I got about 50 pages in, I was hooked. The ending took a turn I wasn't quite sure about but I did feel like it was wrapped up really well. I definitely enjoyed reading it but I don't think I'd say I loved it.

As someone who loves fantasy and all things magical, I was excited to pick up Bone Gap and immerse myself into a story of magical realism. However, this one didn't quite hit the nail on the head for me. IMO, there's a way magical realism can be done successfully that serves the story and it has to be done in a careful manner where magic and realism interconnect seamlessly.

Bone Gap seemed to do the opposite, adding magical components just for the sake of calling it magical realism. Although the writing was beautiful, I wasn't invested in any of the characters and didn't find myself reaching for this book every chance I got. Maybe I just had too high of expectations with this one.

More like 3.5 stars. I really liked the characters, especially Finn. It was just weird how it went back and forth between what seemed real and what was more magic. Even though for the most part I liked it, it was just odd to me.

DID NOT FINISH: 33%

I thought the book was kind of boring and I didn’t care for the writing style too much.

I wanted to love Bone Gap, but I ended up appreciating it more for its individual parts than as a whole work. There were many gorgeous moments, but all together it felt disjointed. I'm a fan of magical realism; I'm happy that it has made a foray into the YA lit universe (The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender does it so well), but the magical realism here felt, well, a little too magical. Still, Bone Gap is a book that will appeal to patient readers and fans of TSABSOAL.
