While this book was well-written, it is not destined to be a favorite of mine. I can understand why it has its place in literature, but it will not be a book I will return to.

Why have I never read this before!? I love the author's wry observations on human nature, which reminded me somewhat of Jane Austen.

It was long and drawn out. I couldn't finish it. Maybe someday in the future. When Thackeray isn't going on about the history of certain characters, minor ones, his commentary on the society at teh time was witty and satirical. I just couldn't get through tht e history of the characters and their servants, children.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

The author introduces too many characters aimlessly near the middle, the beginning had a lot clearer narrative to follow. Perhaps because the author is very elaborate in his descriptions I didn’t enjoy it much

I am finally, finally, FINALLY done with this book. It took me over a month, but in my defense, I have been busy doing things like becoming a real adult and feeding myself on the regular and working and all. But enough of that - this book was good. It was not 830-pages worth of good. By the time the second generation was introduced, I was ready to be done with it all (but I powered through since I'd already gotten so far in).

There were quite a few moments that got chuckles out of me, and I found almost all of the author's asides to the readers to be highly entertaining. I loved the character flaws that Thackeray dug into over the course of the novel, and Dobbin's growing a backbone at the end of the book was HIGHLY satisfying (as in I put the book down for a few moments to marvel at how very satisfied I was). I was thoroughly entertained by George and Rawdon Sr.'a character arcs.

A few minor quibbles: it is sometimes entertaining to think about the ways that women can be cruel to each other and cut each other down, but halfway into the novel I was done with Thackeray's million assertions that women are the cruelest creatures known to man (with the exception of dear, sweet, mindless Amelia). Also the length: clearly this guy got paid for each installment he provided because this book is WICKED long.

I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't reread it.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but it was sitting on my bookcase waiting to be read, so I gave it a go. It was... a steady read. At no point did I feel like I couldn't put the book down, but at the same time I found myself steadily working through it. It was an interesting reading the descriptions of old english society, and the story really didn't seem to have a true protagonist.

I actually really enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. Despite it's length and some parts dragging a tad dye to it being originally published serially in lots of separate installments, I found most of it, especially all the drama pretty entertaining. I love love love satirical novels with the majority of the characters are absolutely horrible, they're kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, I find them fascinating and WMT portrayed this really well, especially Becky Sharp who captured my attention immediately when she was introduced and who I remained an apologist for ngl
