A masterpiece. This savagely satirical, often hilarious work is as relevant now as when it was written. Whilst an unflinchingly dark portrayal of human nature dominates, it is not bereft of hope or humanity.

"Vanity Fair" was published in 1847, and although it shows its age in certain ways (racism and misogynistic scenes/language), it was an entertaining story. I quite liked how Thackeray criticized society through Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. Thackeray certainly had a comedic writing style that I enjoyed. I'm going to keep my eye out for more of his work!

'Which of us is happy in this world? Which of us has his desire? or, having it, is satisfied?'

One of my favourite books. A masterpiece of satire.

I first read this one at a very dark point in my life. When I was actually living in Bath. Maybe 2005? Back then I liked the book, but I was too young to really understand it. It's not a hard book, that's one of the great things about it. It's very accessible. But it takes a while to learn how people work enough to register the skill employed here.

It's essentially a book about people. People with all their selfishness, cruelty and scheming laid bare. It follows people who, even in their moments of being kind, are more often ignorant and vapid.

'The name for God in the lips and hearts of little children; and here was one who was worshipping a stone!'

If you're looking for a challenge, you could absolutely rewrite this one and set it in the Instagram/YouTube world of likes and following. The new insipid social hierarchy. Which is actually a trap, same as the social classes of the past. It just tricks people into a false sense of self-importance. Their entire life becomes a performance for other people. And eventually they realise how hollow it is and that it's too late and they've lost every chance of true authenticity and happiness. Because you lose who you were behind the mask. The mask falls away and you feel hollow and empty forever.

I got distracted, sorry. Yes. Funny, smart, poignant. It's a masterclass of a novel. Surprisingly contemporary too.

'...they say wounds tingle most when they are about to heal.'
