This book did not hit the mark for me, in comparison with the first two books; Oraya and Rhain’s relationship was very convoluted, true enemies to lovers that entailed games/trials and betrayal. With that precedence being set, the songbird and the heart of stone fell short in delivering the drama, the slow burn the betrayal and the politics of the first two books. This book follows the stories of the prince and wraith warden Asar and Mische acolyte of the sun god. Both Mische and Asar were commissioned by two different gods to venture into the underworld to complete a task. Unbeknownst to both the FMC and Mmc, both task were counterproductive, and at the end it would then be revealed that the FMC was tasked to do the opposite of what the MMC was task to do.
I know it’s centered around different characters, and the back story for both the FMC’s and MMC’s past was very underwhelming and were a bit similar to Rhains back story. I felt as a reader, I was okay in not reading about their story.
Their quest that they had set out on by the gods was straightforward enough but I felt like it was disjointed being thrown back into the past constantly, whether or not what the characters were experiencing at the time were actually happening or just an illusion was very inception/ Caravel- like for me and I, unfortunately do not do well with that type of narration. I also felt like throughout their quest, they kept playing hiding seek with the MMC’s ex and the wraith that would just suddenly appear, an epic fight will ensue for a couple of pages, everyone disappears, then they venture into the next realm of the underworld to collect the next relic. And what happened to Elias? He stole the item and then disappeared. I don’t like character drop offs. I need a conclusion.
I’m feeling more like this could have been a novella like six scorched roses; I don’t see the need for two books.
