3.75-4 stars. So damn cute. Especially Desi and her dad!
3.5 stars -- really loved Desi and her dad's relationship a LOT and all her friendships too. Her plan for Luca just got a bit too out of hand for me.. but it was overall a cute and fun book! makes me want to watch k dramas - something my mom watches all the time!
My Thoughts:
Yay for another YA father-daughter relationship that I love! Desi and her dad's closeness was probably one of my favorite things about I Believe In A Thing Called Love. I love it when there are great parental relationships in YA and this is a prime example! They've really come to rely on each other. They confide in one another and I love their nights watching K-dramas!
The story is super cute -- Desi is good at everything, a straight A student, over achiever, type A personality person. But she cannot handle romance. So she makes an outline based on K-drama romance formulas and uses this on her crush. The story is really cute and I liked Desi a lot. There were some parts of her plan though that I felt got out of hand. So that detracted from my enjoyment a bit but the friendships, funny moments and father-daughter relationship made up for it. Not to mention, this book made me want to get into K-dramas!
In Short...
A cute contemporary that will get you in the mood for summer and also make you want to watch K-dramas if you don't already!

Super fun and fluffy. Should come with the tag line: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
4.25 stars
Such a cute contemporary!
I'm docking .75 because the main character is cray-cray for thinking K-dramas are applicable to real life.
Sadly, I've only seen a part of an episode of Boys Over Flowers and my K-drama knowledge starts and ends there.
Plus, she's too perfect to be an actual high school student. Although her need for control was understandable due to her mother dying at an early age.
The only relatable aspect, for me at least, was her being unlucky in love part.
I loved Desi's relationship with her father and her friends.
Her father was potentially my favorite character, actually. Joking, maybe.
I appreciate that the whole best friend is secretly in love the main character in order to create extra turmoil did not happen.
Although, romance-wise I did not like that. I kinda wish her best friend, Fiona, chewed her out for potentially throwing away her future.

Spoiler
she threw her interview away for her boyfriend
This book is so funny! Our main character, Desi, is good at pretty much everything. Except love. She's known for her hilariously terrible attempts at flirting. It's always bummed her out, but then she meets Luca and decides she's finally going to get the guy. She studies Korean dramas and writes out her own list of steps to follow that will help her. What follows is pure gold.
I would totally give this book 5 stars if there weren't a few of the steps that she definitely took too far (i.e. putting her and Luca in pretty serious danger a few times).
The romance/sexual content is pretty clean. There's occasional kissing, but nothing to really make a teen blush.
Also, the relationship between Desi and her dad was adorable and refreshing. As someone that pretty easily got along with my awesome parents, I enjoyed reading their relationship. Most parents aren't evil, despite what most YA wants you to believe.
This book is awesome. Seriously, read it! I can't wait to read more from Maurene Goo!

Mostly the last effort to win him over (almost drowning). It would've been a dealbreaker for me if I were Luca. It seemed unrealistic that he would forgive her so easily at that point, even for LURRRVE.The romance/sexual content is pretty clean. This is such a cute book and was a fun, fast read.
I loved how much Korean culture was in here! The food and all of the K-drama was fantastic! (I’m seriously going to start watching K-drama now -because I need a new obsession in my life! 😉)
Desi is a great female character...even if she is a control freak that goes a tad off the rails at times. Her relationship with her dad is one of my favorite parts of this book. They work together so well, support each other and have fun together. I wish there would have been a little more discussion around how the loss of her mother shaped her (it was there but in secondary story telling).
Fiona and Wes are great best friends (who amazingly go along with her crazy plans, all the while pointing out they are crazy!).
Luca is the perfect book boyfriend with his brooding good looks, amazing artistic ability, crazy parents (he loves his mom even when she’s crazy and is fighting with his dad but they do start to change that relationship) and just a deep Iove for Desi!
Recommend: 14 and up- no swearing (although the f word is alluded to a few times); no real sex talk or scenes - again, it’s alluded to but never graphically discussed except for the “sex party scene” where the characters insinuate other people are doing it and there are a lot of people seen making out); a couple of swoon worthy kisses; the loss of Desi’s mother is often discussed but never dwelled on; definite consequences to bad decisions throughout the book but the characters (for the most part) learn from them - and Desi makes some doozies!; Fiona has a girlfriend; really liked that parents and teachers aren’t made to look like idiots in this book - even Luca’s strained relationship with his dad seems to work out by the end; there seems to be a theme that planning is ok but sometimes life happens and you just have to change your plans; K-drama is going to be my next obsession!!

*2.5
This definitely wasn’t as good as The Way You make Me Feel. It was alright. The whole idea of using K dramas to get the “boy of your dreams” is a little weird. And the end when she pretends to not know how to swim…. girl bye, that was so embarrassing hahaha.
I could’ve done without this read but it was easy, quick, and just a teeny bit of fun.

I loved this. It was a funny romantic novel that followed a girl name Desi as she tried to make the new boy Luca fall for her by using steps she learned from watching Korean dramas. As a fellow addict of Korean Dramas myself, I couldn't help but to connect with the main character as she mimicked some of the outrageous acts of Korean dramas.
