I'm docking a star only because I didn't 100% love the writing style, and because of the implausibility of 85% of this book (but, really, that's irrelevant because that's the point; it's like a k-drama!) Overall, this was a really, really cute read and so fun as someone who watches k-dramas! The totally unrealistic bits made it almost as outrageous as dramas can get, and I really appreciated the effort to embraces a lot of those tropes in a contemporary YA setting.

(Sidenote: You should NEVER copy Jan-Di's move at the end of Boys Over Flowers in real life?! Like, what was Desi *thinking*?!)

(Double sidenote: My least favorite moment in this book is
Spoiler when Desi goes with Luca and misses her Stanford interview, gets snappy with the admissions guy, FRAMES her rejection letter (I mean, I could MAYBE see it, but it was really stupid to me), and ends up at Boston (which, yes, has a better med program, but is conveniently closer to Luca?) It's a little too easy; I know this is a k-drama trope, too, but sometimes I want to see a girl make good decisions and still have a successful long distance relationship! Even if it's more implausible than most of this book!)

Finished this a few days ago but was out of town-very cute YA read (and third in a row for my unintentional We Need Diverse Books read). Desi Lee is a super motivated Type A person in almost all aspects of her life... except for dating. When a cute new boy comes to their school, Desi decides she'll fix her flailures (flirting fails) by creating rules to get her man, derived from watching several series of K-Dramas.

I think I'd pick up on more references to tropes had I watched any k-dramas before, but it was a cute frame structure and she's such a likeable teen. Hooray for teen girls!

I believed, and still believe, that you can build your dreams brick by brick. That you can accomplish anything with persistence. Even falling in love. - Desi Lee

You know kdrama fanatics love this book and who's that kdrama fanatic? ME

Maybe I read this at a wrong time? Not my kind of romantic dynamic. Nope. Only made it until page 63.

4.7 stars. I really loved this book. I picked it up because it reminded me of the "To All the Boy's I've Loved Before" series and it didn't disappoint. It a feel good book and it's something to read when you're in the mood for a nice happy summer romance contemporary. For me it was something refreshing after binging a whole fantasy series. Unexpected things had me burst out laughing at the ridiculousness and I just liked the whole concept of the story and the characters. I thought the characters had very distinct personalities and I appreciated the realistic attraction between characters instead of insta-love. I don't see many books in YA with Asian American main characters that I can relate to, but I'm glad I met Desi and got to know her. The whole concept of k-dramas was a fun aspect of modern culture to explore and I really enjoyed this read. I think Ill revisit it in the future.
