The love of kdramas I have. This book fills me up and is a kdrama itself. Desi unfortunate events lead her to find the male lead of her dreams. Only one could hope that I would find my main lead but hey second leads have my heart as well so I wouldn’t mind
This book is a straight-up k-drama x fan fiction come to life! And I gotta say — the fact that this made it into mainstream consciousness totally helps the "diverse books" campaign. My only gripe is that this book didn't really bring anything new to the table. The "aggressive, high-achieving Asian female" trope has been done to death at this point, and is as cliche as the old "demure, meek Asian female" one.
Desi put Luca on such a ridiculous pedestal, and the story revolved around some ridiculous insta-love. I personally wasn't swooning from Luca's persona. By the end of it, I did come around to him though — I guess it was sweet.
Some plot points fell flat though, like the whole Wes love-triangle. What happened to it? It was barely a flash in the pan, and never mentioned again. I'd expect something a bit more substantial than that.

I had heard so many wonderful things about this book that I thought it was about time that I checked it out. I do enjoy contemporary YA fiction, so I was happy to give it a go. This is the first time I’ve read a book from Maurene Goo and I was suitably impressed! I don’t think it’s a book that will stay with me for a long time, but it was certainly a pleasure to read!

The plot of this story was a little silly and predictable, but it was easy enough to read. I really enjoyed Desi’s Dad. I think it’s so important that we have positive family relationships represented in YA literature. Their relationship was very sweet to read about.

Vive con su papá, a quien llama Appa, y quien se hizo cargo de criarla luego de que su madre falleciera cuando ella tenía apenas 7 años. Desde entonces siempre ha querido enorgullecerlo y es por eso que siempre está metida en proyectos escolares, haciendo servicio a la comunidad y encargándose de mil cosas a la vez.
Es súper perfeccionista, le encanta tener todo controlado y organizado y siempre está intentando superarse.

Luca Drakos es el chico nuevo y la primera vez que se topa con Desi ella no puede evitar sentirse atraída por él. Luca tuvo que cambiarse de escuela porque se mudó a la casa de su papá (sus padres están separados) y la primera vez que habló con Desi, como siempre, a ella le ocurrió algo totalmente vergonzoso que hace que Luca salga huyendo. Harta de que siempre le suceda lo mismo con los chicos y basándose en su opinión de que con perseverancia puedes lograr lo que sea (incluso enamorarse), decide crear una lista para conquistar a Luca (según los dramas coreanos).
"Había un chico parado en el umbral de la puerta. Tachen chico, era un espécimen de chico increíblemente perfecto. Alto pero sin ser larguirucho, pelo negro alborotado parcialmente metido dentro de un gorro de lana gris. Vestía unos jeans oscuros y una camiseta de mangas largas bajo un chaleco inflado azul marino. Y, Dios misericordioso, su rostro: piel aceitunada, una mandíbula angular que podía cortar el cristal, ojos oscuros enmarcados por un par de cejas serias, y una boca ancha que sonreía con indecisión mientras miraba dentro del salón de clases.”
A partir de que crea la lista y comienza a superar cada uno de los pasos, ella y Luca comienzan a conocerse y a pasar más tiempo juntos, y podemos notar como la chispa se va encendiendo entre ambos. Pero no todo es color de rosas, porque entre medio de estos pasos surgirán problemas que podrán hacer que todo termine en un desastre.
La historia está narrado por Desi en primera persona por lo que es súper fácil conectar con ella y vamos entendiendo poco a poco por qué es como es y cuales son sus motivaciones en la vida.
Tengo que admitir que empaticé con ella desde el capítulo uno y que me pareció un personaje súper divertido. Pero además de los personajes principales tenemos personajes secundarios que son muy importantes en la historia. El que más me gustó fue Appa. Sin dudas es un hombre increíble que siempre está pendiente de Desi y todo lo que hace en la vida es por y para ella. Si hay algo que me encanta ver en los libros es la unión familiar y el apoyo incondicional, eso nunca pasa de moda, y la conexión que tiene con su hija se me hace realmente maravillosa. También tenemos a Wes y a Fiona, los mejores amigos de Desi, quienes cumplen un rol muy importante ya que son los cómplices en todas sus locuras.
En cuanto a Luca la autora lo presenta como un chico muy misterioso, pero a medida que vamos adentrándonos en la lectura vamos conociendo su vida, su personalidad y sus secretos.
La pluma de Maurene es muy fresca. La verdad que el libro se lee de una sentada. Los capítulos no son ni muy largos ni muy cortos pero te mantienen enganchada todo el tiempo, a pesar de que para mi gusto me hubiera gustado un poquito más de drama en medio de la trama.
Algo que me gustaría aclarar es que si bien la historia habla de Dramas coreanos, Doramas, Kdramas, o como gusten llamarlos, no hace falta ser fan ni conocedor del tema. Personalmente jamás he visto ni un sólo capítulo de uno de estos Dramas y entendí la historia a la perfección. Quiero aclararlo porque yo pensé que este libro no me iba a gustar justamente por eso, y me terminé llevando una sorpresa.
Resumiendo: esta es una historia muy divertida de amor y de amistad. Si bien hubo algunas cositas que me parecieron un poco extremas y quizás situaciones que rozaban lo obsesivo, no creo que la autora quiera dar un mal mensaje, sino que se basó en estos Dramas y en algunos de los disparates que pueden ocurrir en ellos. Pero si hay algún joven leyendo esto: por favor, no intenten imitar los comportamientos de Desi en casa.

Loved this book! Like Twilight, this book gave the reader a quirky and relatable main character to live through. Unlike Twilight and Meyer, Goo did not reuse the same few descriptors to explain the heroine’s emotions and demeanor. I loved how this book was written, and after finishing the Twilight series all too quickly and looking for another equally goofy yet incredibly addicting book to read, I Believe in a Thing Called Love was just what I was looking for. Now the only issue is finding another book that will rope me in like this one.

Like any good kdrama, this was not quite realistic, a little over the top, and pretty predictable, but a funny, heartfelt, and fun ride that's hard to put down. A lot of drama references, but well-explained for people who don't watch as many as me (I actually haven't seen a bunch mentioned here, although almost every one was on my absolutely ginormous to watch list if not), which excited me and are all good starting points for people trying to get into them (although honestly I wish I could get Desi's opinion on the ending Flower Boy Ramen Shop because that was the worst case of second lead syndrome I've ever had). The only thing that wasn't like a kdrama was the plot felt a little skimpy -
but then it wasn't trying to last for 16 episodes after having started shooting while it was still being written, so no subplots were dragged out. Maybe just an okay YA romcom in the grand scheme of things, but a delight as a drama addict.

'"Er, let's try this." He reached over and placed his hand on mine, which started sweating immediately at his touch. He kept his hand on mine and drew a rough, large triangle and then a little rectangle below it.
"Um, that looks like a cartoon tree," I said.
His face was so close that I could feel his warm breath on my cheek when he sighed in exasperation. "Miss Literal, can you wait a second before jumping to conclusions?" I refrained from calling him Mr. Abstract.'
Oh, this was a sweet little romance and I'm in a good mood now. I love that there's that sort of back and forth between the two of them. Luca isn't the smoothest guy despite having the looks, and Desi has a lot of past awkward incidents when she flirts, but when the two of them are together, there's clearly something there. Yes, she's got this whole kdrama success plan drawn up with 24 steps (!), but before that, even if she doesn't see it, they're on the same wavelength, and he's interested! I appreciated that. It wasn't much of a stretch for them to get together with the antics thrown in, because they'd get there eventually.
Too often the guy is a jerk or someone who wouldn't ever see the main character without major desperation, but this isn't that. Luca's artsy, sensitive, with this honky laugh that's busted out a ton when he talks to Desi, who comes with his own problems and trust issues. He cares a lot for Desi and has these moments of concern that I know I would've just fallen so hard for if I read this as a teen. We need more romantic heroes like him - unabashedly aware of his feelings, and appreciates honesty and passion, instead of mysterious and aloof jerks where you can't picture any healthy communication on a long term basis. Desi has all these insecurities where she tells herself not to do this or that and in general, worries a lot, but whenever she lets herself geek out about cars or trees or medicine, it brings them closer together. He sees this other side of her with all these interests and this amazing confidence in her goals, and falls for that. He falls for the fumbling too, in all its glory. It's very cute.

Confidence boosted, I decided to actually try flirting. Lord, here I go. I gently bumped my hip against his. He looked over at me lickety-split, surprised. I smiled. "I'm a nerd that can clearly outrun you. Can you handle the rest of the walk back to the bus or do you need me to carry you?"
He raised an eyebrow and I flushed - had I gone too far? Had I offended his manhood? But then he threw his head back and laughed - this for-real laugh complete with signature honk. He grinned and replied, "Yeah, actually, can you?" I cracked a huge smile, not even thinking about whether I had food in my teeth or if I was at a flattering angle so that my cheeks wouldn't puff out too much.'
The relationship between Desi and her father was a major highlight for me. As a bit of an overachiever, there could be other ways to portray the two of them, especially with the mother out of the picture, and I thought Maurene Goo nailed it. They're both very protective of the other, but it isn't stifling. Desi has this drive to succeed that's very admirable and that has taken her quite far in life so far, yet it isn't because of her father pressuring her. They light up the page when they're interacting! I love that her dad is the most loyal fan of kdramas, whereas Desi fell into it (after having them play on in the background her entire life) when she had a lightbulb moment and thought to use the tropes to get Luca as a boyfriend. Her father is an absolute sweetheart, with all the dedication, elbow grease, and the dad jokes in the world to get his daughter through any obstacle in life. It's lovely.

I scoffed. "Appa, seriously? We watched Brokeback Mountain together."
If I was grading this on a general scale it'd be more of a 3 or 3.5, but the premise of it and the fact that it's a YA romance done so well, gets a 4 for me. If it was YA alone I'd want to give it a 4.5. I want to see this book itself adapted into a drama, and just go super meta. The chapters are plotted perfectly but it all flowed so well! 24 episodes for this would be fun. Maybe shorter episodes so it doesn't drag too much, haha. 30 minutes per episode. You can enjoy this even without being a kdrama fan, but there's a ton of easter eggs if you do! Even me, who have watched only a few (though admittedly from the ages of 1-18 watched HK dramas a la TVB like my life depended on it so I'm way closer to the target audience), got to enjoy a few inside jokes. :)
Ahhh this book! I feel like I would get along with Desi cause like I’m good with everything except when it comes to the male species.
