This book was so cute!  I really loved Desi and how she needed steps to finding true love.  It kind of sounds like something I might have come up with in high school.  I loved Desi, and she's full of awesome and amazingness, and I dare you to not like her, because it's pretty damn hard not to.

I really liked the relationship she had with her father, and it was nice to such such a great parent-child relationship. I know parents who aren't around a lot are a big part of YA, so it was nice to see Desi's dad and how involved he was in her life.

I haven't watched any K-dramas, so I am completely clueless about it would parallel them...especially since they are her guide to find love.  It kind of makes me want to watch them, just to get a sense of the stories, and how they influenced her guide to getting a guy.  The author does have a bunch of recommendations at the end of the book, so maybe those will be a good place to start...assuming I actually sit down to watch one of them.

Back to the book, though.  As much as I loved Desi, I kind of hated how she thought she was different than Luca's ex. In her own way, it was a little bit manipulative, plus the whole blowing off her college interview for him kind of bugged me too.  But also in line with your typical rom-com...so...I guess I have mixed feelings about it.  She makes some questionable decisions, but there is something very endearing about her, hence the mixed feelings.

My Rating: 4 stars.  It is a cute book, and even though I wasn't a big fan of some of Desi's decisions, I still really liked the story and I especially liked her relationship with her dad.

It is a simple formula for falling in love if you have a plan and watch a lot of Korean dramas. At least, that's what Desi believes when she meets a guy and wants to stop failing at flirting and get a boy to like her. I laughed out loud (with embarrassing tiny snorts) for most of the book.

This is less about K-dramas and more about being a dork when it comes to love and relationships. Desi gets friendship right, school right, her parental relations - just not boys. Very cute and very entertaining.

A lot of secondhand embarrassment, but also super cute.

Read for Popsugar: A book with song lyrics in the title

Oof, mixed feelings on this one - I love the premise of using K-drama steps to get into a relationship, but the way Desi follows them was very off-putting and like, literally dangerous. And then
Spoiler she doesn't even learn her lesson and is still trying to manipulate the guy (and endanger his life!!) in the final pages!! and he's cool with it!!
. Good thing I liked Appa so much.

So much fun--funny and charming and entertaining... love it.

4.5

This was such a joy to read, which I figured would be the case, as I began the prolouge, and was already invested in Desi's life. What was perhaps not expected, but hoped for was that it'd be SUCH a quality rom-com.

This book has a lot of heart and humor mixed with feels. I love it. Like, I legit cried, I wanted to hand letter quotes and keep them in my journal. It was such a journey for me.

Yes, it's a bit...I guess, it's not gonna convert you if you don't like cute rom coms, but if you already like that, this is an excellent choice.

I am also going to be very typical and watch my very first k-drama this summer.

desi doesn't deserve a happy ending

3.5 Stars

I bought this book because of the cover and the title. I saw, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," and I started dancing, as the addicting song by The Darkness played in my head. I mean, that's as good a reason as any to spend money on something. Add to that, the adorable cover, and Amazon had my money.

This book, by Maurene Goo, is the epitome of cute. The plot is cute and the characters are cute, and I say that with respect. I didn't think I'd like it at first, because the opening chapters seemed a bit obvious, but it wasn't long before I was enchanted.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love follows Desi, a type A heroine during her senior year, after she concocts an insane plan to get a boy to fall in love with her. Desi is a literal, fact-based, skeptic who as it turns out is deeply romantic. She's an overachiever and caretaker, a role she inhabited after her mother died. She's kind, smart, loyal, and fearless.

She's also an awkward, clumsy mess when it comes to romance and flirting. The klutzy scenes made me roll my eyes at first, but once I was about 1/3 into the book, I just decided to just roll with it, and I ended up finding Desi funny and endearing and started rooting for her.

This novel is predictable, but I still wanted to finish it. Literally, it follows a formula as Desi follows a formula, and each chapter heading tells you what's happening next, but I still kept reading, because I love romance. I knew how it would play out and how it would end (as we always know how romances end) but that didn't make me love it any less. I closed this book with a huge smile on my face, and a strong hankering to download a bunch of K dramas.

So, I recommend this book to romance lovers (obviously), YA lovers, readers who crave diversity and lively characters. Maurene Goo's novel is vibrant and special.
