Over the top and dramatic, but deliberately so, which was fun!
I thought this book was just okay. Big fan of Wes and Fiona. And Appa stole the freaking show. However, Desi is straight up insane. I understand that this is based on a typical K-Drama, but staging a car accident? One in which Luca almost dies??
Not.
Cool.
I liked that Luca’s relationship with his dad improved as the book went on, though I can’t quite figure out what the issue was to begin with. Ned reminds me of a Southern dad. He seemed to understand Luca a bit more, which made me happy.
Lillian was great. Even though Desi and Luca has broken up, Desi still called Lillian for help. I liked the idea of this book, I just can’t get past all of the absurdity that Desi put Luca through. He seemed like a nice enough boy.
I was very confused about Wes and Violet dating— it just sort of appeared and didn’t show how. I guess in order to really show how lonely Desi was, both of her friends had to be in relationships. I don’t really understand, but okay.
All in all, I didn’t hate this book. But I definitely didn’t love it. For someone as smart as Desi supposedly is, blowing off an interview for STANFORD of all places doesn’t seem to be in line with her character. Especially considering her whole character arc surrounded her going to Stanford. Almost every chapter mentioned it. Surprise! She doesn’t get in. I liked the message— you can plan and plan, but at the end, fate is what it is.

Powieść typowo young adultowa, przewidywalna, uroczo romantyczna i romantycznie urocza.
Totalnie.

I was hoping for a bit more from this book, it was a bit cliche but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The writing was off, in some places.
Desi Lee was hard to chew.
It tried to be cute but ultimately failed.
Appa was nice.
I couldn't decide if Luca was a douchebag or not.
Desi was definitely a douche.
High expectations, not enough execution.

I haven't watched many K-Dramas in my life, but I have seen enough that when I saw this book on the shelf I knew I had to pick it up. I was not disappointed.
From the first page, Desi and her antics captured me and made me root for her and Luca, wanting them to succeed just as I would any heroine and her love interest in a k-drama. I liked her character a lot and was so happy with the ending of the book.
This book also made me want to watch more k-dramas, especially the ones mentioned in this book. Definitely would recommend this book to people.

It was a burito style book, the beginning was kinda sorta almost ok and then after that it was ass and then the middle was cutish but u knew that it would start going down hill cuz the mc did stupid shit during the first ass part so u didn't let ur self be lost in the cuteness until u realized that u lost that battle and then the assness came back. It continued to be ass and then in the ending of the last chapter everyone was cute but most of this book was ass or anticipation of ass happening. I managed to not hit my head against a wall when i really wanted to so I feel like I have gotten a bit more self control even when feeling too much second hand embarrassment, but that didn't mean i stopped scream and squealing out of embarrassment or disappointment or anger.
Adult me loves this book and everything about this book. Teenage me would be squealing and flipping back to the beginning of the book instead of writing this review right now. It's always so hard to write about a book you love rather than a book that didn't quite work for you. When I love a book, I feel a little like when Desi and her dad made ramen for Luca: all of the ingredients are there, they are put in at the right time, and at the end, everything comes together so that you have this simple yet beautifully fragrant food for the soul. Why do I love this book? Let me count the ways:
Desi is an amazing leading lady. I would have identified so strongly with her when I was in high school and she made me feel nostalgic. And hopeful. Like maybe love and chivalry aren't dead. I love Desi for being unabashedly interested in everything. She's very smart, but she makes it clear that she works for everything. She isn't just naturally good at academia and sports; she says she had to practice to become good. But the one area of life in which Desi has very little practice and subsequently fails at is love. The girl can't flirt to save her life. She is a senior in high school and she has never had a boyfriend. And then one day she meets new student Luca and her feelings overwhelm her with a determination to get it right. Her answer to this conundrum? Well, she turns to her father's beloved Korean dramas for assistance. She watches a lot of them and then compiles a list of steps that should ensure success. Hilarity ensues.
Of course, there are some things that happen that are especially over the top. Desi actually plans a minor car accident. And she untethers the boat she is on with Luca so they will drift out to sea without his noticing. There was even some dialogue that seemed a bit far fetched for a seventeen year old boy (Luca calls Desi "missy" a lot, in a manner not unlike my nana...), but all of these things just reinforce the influence of the Korean dramas. And, thankfully, there was a guide to Korean dramas for beginners in the back of the book. After reading this, I am really looking forward to diving into this genre.
Quite honestly, this was the sweetest and most real romance/romantic comedy I have read in quite some time. The romance struck just the right note and Desi wasn't pretentious or clumsy or daft or only completely focused on her crush like so many other heroines. I highly recommend this book!

Two stars for the plot and completely unbelievable characters but four stars for the author's ability to write like someone talks, if that makes sense. Her breezy writing style makes for effortless reading (in a good way.) I just wish the story had more depth.
