A really really interesting book. I wasn’t sure what to expect and Blood Rush didn’t disappoint. Verplaetse writes with conviction and is a great story teller however a small note is they lose focus at times and divert several pages to unnecessary detail.

The final of the three explanations that Verplaetse gives for humans’ captivation with blood is particularly compelling and fairly well evidenced. It is hard to deny that we (Western society) have a sometimes uneasy relationship with modernity and so glimpses of the ‘sublime’ horrify/ amaze/ captivate us.

The first section looks at antiquity and the occurrence of ritual sacrifice among other phenomena and reads like a skilfully crafted story. Although enjoyable to read, this first section could be condensed significantly in my opinion as there is a fair bit of repetition, same with the second section which explores whether blood triggers reactions in humans according to science.

Overall an enjoyable read and the first two sections of the books are worth it for the third- takeaways are mainly from this section which contains a more clear and unique narrative woven by Verplaetse himself.
