im kinda confused on how to rate this...the action was consistent, the pieces are finally starting to align with a pace that’s enjoyable but...but...
as heartbroken as i was to learn that the pll books are written by multiple authors all under the name sara shepard, this betrayal was only exacerbated by the fact that the author of this arc in specific did NOT do their research. the tonal shift of the narrator is NOT subtle (it feels like a parody of the previous books) with some very noticeable writing idiosyncrasies that are persistent throughout. and none of which i care to cite specifically. not only that though. perhaps most irritatingly of all, the physical descriptions of the characters are suddenly inconsistent. uh ? i’m gonna go off on a limb here and say that the appearances of the characters are pretty important. i mean, HELLO ? they are called PRETTY little liars ??? the book is obsessed with the physical appearances of their characters ! why get these simple details wrong ? why get any details wrong ?! emily’s eye color is pronounced the wrong color twice. within, like, three pages of each other !! it was like reading a poorly written fanfiction. i’m actually perplexed.
this arc just amplifies every issue i have with the series to an absurd degree.
this book (this author) i feel, has completely misunderstood the intent behind a lot of decisions made in the first four novels with respect to characterization and setting. it’s a bit (lol) shallow now. and it falls victim to the whole First Two Books In An Arc Are Boring As Hell But The Last Two Are Action Packed thing.
but i’m still

Cannot wait to read the final instalment in this series. If only my library would hurry up and get a copy to me. Fingers crossed that I don't have to wait too long!!
Heartless by Sara Shepard is the 7th installment of the Pretty Little Liars series.
The entertainment is strong in this book. I was a little nervous about it because there was a lot of entertainment in the previous book, but I think this one topped it.
The four main characters are very developed. Spencer's chapters were amazing, Aria's chapters were great, Hannah's chapters were better than the last book, and with Emily's chapters, I felt like she was more of a background character. I hope going forward, Emily becomes more main than the other three.
The plot of this book was the best element to it. This book has you on a crazy ride; you get lost in the adventure and the ending. I haven't read such a good ending in a while.
The writing style and voice connect to the four different main characters, which was flushed out very well. I have to recognize that Sarah Shepard's descriptions are well-detailed. It's good for not just a teenage audience but also an adult audience.
I did catch a little error, but I'm not going to deduct a star for that. I would give Heartless by Sara Shepard 5 out of 5 stars, and I loved it.

This one is probably the first more painful PLL book. NOT because it's a bad book (it's a very good book) but only because...the Liars go through so much hard stuff in this book. Hanna seems to take the brunt of it, like she normally does - but Spencer, Aria and Emily each take their share. They learn horrible secrets, are treated horribly by the press and town and...ugh, it's all so painful to read. I wanted to fight for them to try to make everyone see they didn't do it.
but I guess that's okay too. Wanting to fight for the Pretty Little liars and help them win. I can't wait for some good things to happen to these girls again (and man I miss Ezra!!)
