Dropped at 50%. Another one in the series of books that were recommended because of their magic system. It has a fairly standard start with all the usual fantasy trappings, but then the scales escalate and it's a whole lot of plot armour and convenient mcguffins and i didn't think there was any tension. the magic system was also not really interesting, thanks to one of the mcguffins. The women in this were also written badly. They exist for the protagonist to fuck and (so far), the only female mage is a bloody sex mage.

It got my attention and kept it. I don't think I'll remember anything about this in a year, but I enjoyed it while it lasted.

The premise is a familiar one. A spellmonger (ex war mage) is motivated to warn villages about attacks from goblins which leads him into the goblin conflict. His life history is examined in light of this involvement (young lad discovers his talent goes to school and to war) As this story progressed, I wondered if it was going to be worth the read, but the author's skilled story telling and development of engaging characters saved the day. All in all, the book is entertaining.

Smut, but with fantastic magical battles and spell empowered sex. I enjoyed it, but I won't be continuing down the series.

Interesting magical system and a well rounded world. I appreciated the attention to the sociology of the various races and different viewpoints of each race's concept of evil. It is definitely male-centric in a patriarchal society. Passer of the Bechdel test it most definitely is not.
The action scenes are well written and gripping. Definitely triggered my imagination. I'd recommend this to others. Now on to the next one.
